THE CENTRAL AND UPPER WEST REGIONS CARRIED THE DAY: NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY 2022,AKYEM ODA.
The National Cross Country 2022 grand event finally took place yesterday, the 26th of February, 2022 at the Akyem Oda Sports Stadium. Many were gathered with different levels of aspirations and anticipation.
The action began at the Sports Stadium at daybreak as the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi and the Chairman of the Local Organization Committee for the Accra 2023 All African Games, Dr. Kweku Ofosu Asare shot the start-up gun together for the commencement of the race. With the male category setting off a few moments earlier than their female counterparts.
At start-up like in any competition, the energy levels of the athletes were very high, but as they approached the final quarter of the 10 Kilometer route, one could tell that not all had that tenacity of the mountain goat to keep up with their pace, let alone to increase for a better finish. But they that were prepared and favoured to complete did that and some even in grand style.
At this point everyone desperately wanted a good finishing position and time, but the fact still remained that not all can finish at the same time and position.
Team Eastern had their Host and win dream shattered at the end of it all, even though the team ranked 9th in the Male Regional Category and 11th in the Female Regional Category. (A detailed result of the entire event attached)
The gallant winners of the male individual category were;
1st Position: Amponsah William (Bib No. 044) from Central Region with a finishing time of 28m 16s 71ms
2nd Position: Koogo Atiga (Bib No. 071) from North East Region with a finishing time of 29m 25s 61ms
3rd Position: Aziz Mohammed (Bib No. 042) from Central Region with a finishing time of 29m 47s 95ms
And that of the female individual category were;
1st Position: Lariba Juliana (Bib No. 115) from Upper East Region with a finishing time of 35m 07s 90ms
2nd Position: Sherifa Moro (Bib No. 011) from Ashanti Region with a finishing time of 35m 41s 51ms
3rd Position: T**i Rosina (Bib No. 123) from Upper West Region with a finishing time of 35m 52s 35ms
On the Female Regional level, we had Upper West Region placing first with 21 points, followed by Ashanti Region on the second position with 34 points and Upper East Region placing third with 47 points.
Finally, for the Male Regional level, we had Central Region ranking first with 23 points, followed by the Upper West Region on the second position with 44 points and Ashanti Region ranking third with 55 points.
The event was graced by the presence of some dignitaries like the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, The Municipal Chief Executive of Birim Central Municipal Assembly, Hon. Victoria Adu Peprah, The National Sports Authority Board Chairman, Hon. Seth Panwum Boyoyo, The LoC Chairman for the Accra 2023 All African Games, Dr. Kweku Ofosu Asare, Akwamuhene of the Akyem Awisa Traditional Area, Nana Yaw Barima Twum Sarkodie (Board Member of the NSA Gh.), Deputy Director General, NSA Admin., Mr. Majeed Bawa, The Dean of all MMDCE’s, Hon. Richmond Amponsah and many others.
It is worth noting that the success of this event could not be achieved without the assistance of the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council, the Eastern Media, the Eastern Regional MMDCE’s, Hon. Alexander Akwesi Acquah, MP, Oda Constituency, Mr. Kennedy Opoku, CEO of Jubilee Hospital, Oda, Baamensa Foundation, Regina Tombrown and the Birim Central Municipal Assembly.
Thank you.
