The Environmental and Social Safeguards Team of the World Bank, including representatives from the World Bank Ghana Office, conducted an inspection tour of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project (GARID) site at Achimota–Abofu, where reconstruction works are ongoing on a damaged section of the Odaw River Channel. This intervention forms part of GARID’s efforts to strengthen flood resilience in the area.

The delegation included Lia Carol Sieghart, Regional Practice Manager, West Africa, E&S, and Ruxandra Maria Floroiu, Lead Environmental Specialist and Regional Standards Coordinator.

During the visit, the team assessed the project’s working environment, inspected the site camp office, and engaged residents living along the project corridor to evaluate the implementation of environmental and social safeguards measures. They expressed satisfaction with the measures implemented by the contractor and commended the Project Coordinating Unit for maintaining high environmental and safety standards.

The team also encouraged continued commitment to enforcing safeguards to ensure the safety and well-being of workers, residents, and the general public.

At GARID, we believe development should enhance the lives of beneficiary communities without causing harm. We remain committed to upholding strong environmental, health, and safety standards across all project sites to support sustainable urban development in Ghana.

The tour focused on assessing progress and encouraging contractors to expedite work for timely and efficient delivery. Hon. Adjei directed all contractors to submit monthly accelerated work plans to his office and highlighted the importance of strict monitoring by the project team to ensure that timelines are met. He also reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to the GARID Project and assured contractors of the necessary support to overcome any genuine implementation challenges.

PROGRESS UPDATE: KANESHIE LOT 2 DRAINAGE WORKS UNDER GARID PROJECT

Exciting progress is being made on the Kaneshie LOT 2 drainage improvement project — stretching from Bank of Ghana Quarters, through Takoradi Station and Ayikai Street, to the Odaw River section at ICGC Transformation Temple.

Construction is currently advancing from the ICGC Christ Temple side towards Bank of Ghana Quarters, and once completed, this critical infrastructure will significantly reduce flooding in Agbogbloshi, Abossey Okai, and other surrounding communities. Residents can look forward to safer streets, improved sanitation, and smoother mobility during the rainy season. Besides, the drain is expected to:

i. Protects homes and properties from seasonal floods
ii. Improves mobility for pedestrians and drivers during heavy rains
iii. Enhances sanitation and reduces waterborne health risks
iv. Supports local businesses and traders by keeping streets accessible
v. Builds long-term resilience in our communities

To accelerate the project and ensure timely completion, the contractor will soon deploy a second team of workers. One team is focusing on the ICGC area, while the other will work along the South Kaneshie section, stretching from Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange to Abossey Okai Bridge. This dual-team approach is expected to fast-track construction and complete the project within the shortest possible time.

We kindly call on traders, business owners, residents, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the construction teams, observe safety measures, and allow space for the works to proceed efficiently. Your support is vital to ensuring that the project is completed successfully and delivers the expected benefits to your communities.

Together, we are building a flood-resilient and safer Accra!

VISION IN PROGRESS - UPDATE ON THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ODAW CHANNEL AT ACHIMOTA-ABOFU

The GARID Project is making significant progress in reconstructing the broken section of the Odaw Channel at Achimota Abofu! Despite the daily challenge of high water volumes from upstream, the contractor has adopted an innovative water diversion strategy and is advancing steadily.

Once completed, this upgraded drain will help reduce flooding in Achimota and the Abofu enclave, bringing much-needed relief to residents. The GARID Project, contractors, and supervising consultants are leaving no stone unturned to ensure timely completion. 🏗

A heartfelt thank you to the World Bank and World Bank Ghana for their continued commitment and support for all GARID Project interventions.

Residents are encouraged to support the construction effort by observing safety measures and cooperating with workers on site. Together, we can make Accra safer and more resilient!

VISION IN PROGRESS - SPOTLIGHT ON THE NIMA PALOMA DRAINS

Good news for residents of Asylum Down, Adabraka, and Circle!

The reconstruction of the Nima–Paloma drains under the GARID Project is making steady progress. Once completed, this project will greatly reduce the risk of flooding in your communities and make the environment safer during the rainy season.

To speed up the work, the contractor has deployed two teams — one working around the Odawna Market area and the other near the Paloma Hotel. This approach will help fast-track the construction and ensure the project is completed within the shortest possible time.

We kindly call on all residents and traders in the project areas to cooperate with the workers, observe safety measures, and allow space for the construction activities to proceed smoothly. Your support is vital to completing this important project on time.

Together, we are building a flood-resilient Accra.

PROGRESS UPDATE ON KANESHIE DRAIN IMPROVEMENT WORKS (LOT ONE)

The ongoing reconstruction of the storm drain under the GARID Project, stretching from Accra Academy to Pamprom Junction in Kaneshie, is advancing at an impressive pace.

This critical intervention is designed to mitigate the perennial flooding in Kaneshie, which has over the years led to devastating losses of lives, properties, and livelihoods of residents, traders, transport operators, and businesses within the enclave.

With works progressing steadily, we are optimistic that the project will be completed ahead of the next major rainy season, bringing long-awaited relief to the Kaneshie community.

In the coming months, a section of the Dr. Busia Road will be closed to traffic to facilitate construction. The public will be duly informed ahead of time, with clear alternative routes provided to minimize inconvenience.

Together, we are building a safer, more resilient Accra.

We’re excited to announce the official start of Lot 2 of our drainage upgrade in Kaneshie—building on the momentum of Lot 1, which began last year.

This new phase covers a critical stretch—from the Bank of Ghana Quarters, through Takoradi Station, along Ayikai Street, and into the South Kaneshie drain, ending at the ICGC Christ Temple section of the Odaw River.

Once completed, the intervention will help bring a lasting flood relief to thousands of residents and businesses across First Light, Takoradi Station, Abossey Okai, and the Agbogbloshie enclave.

This is more than just infrastructure. It’s about safeguarding lives, protecting livelihoods, and building a flood-resilient Accra.

Every meter constructed moves us closer to a resilient, safer Accra. Let’s keep the momentum going!
