Excerpts from the just ended World Urban Forum (WUF 11) held in Katowice, Poland.

The WUF was established in 2001 by the United Nations to examine one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanisation and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies. The first WUF was held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002 and has been held around the world ever since.

WUF11 is co-organized by UN-Habitat, Poland’s Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy and the Municipal Office of Katowice.

DEPARTMENT OF RURAL HOUSING TO PARTNER WITH FIRST NATIONAL BANK AND THE NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME TO DELIVER HOUSING

The Department of Rural Housing under the Ministry of Works and Housing organised a meeting in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) and First National Bank (FNB). This meeting was initiated by First National Bank and at the meeting they discussed the possible collaboration between the three organizations and the role each organization will play. The Department of Rural Housing is to provide the designs and expertise in the construction of the Housing units, FNB the initial funding while NSS will provide the skilled labour, architects, planners and quantity surveyors who will be trained in the production and use of the Local Building Materials (LBM’s). The Department is also to design a one, two and three housing units for this purpose.

This project when started will be in line with the Department’s mandate which is to develop programmes for decent and affordable housing units in the Rural and Peri-Urban areas.
