📌📢: SCDA Donates Four Motorbikes to the Sekyere Central District Health Directorate

Earlier today, the Sekyere Central District Assembly (SCDA), led by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Samuel Somuah and members of Management officially handed over four new jungle motorbikes to the District Health Directorate to be distributed to selected health facilities within the district.

Hon. Somuah noted that the donation was in direct response to a prior request from the Health Directorate for logistical support to enhance community health outreach, particularly in the Afram Plains area. He emphasized that the motorbikes would improve mobility for health workers, facilitating regular community visits and the effective delivery of healthcare services in hard-to-reach locations. He further assured the Directorate of the Assembly’s continued support and hinted at additional donations in the near future.

In her remarks, the District Director of Health Services, Madam Susana Nkrumah, expressed sincere gratitude to the Assembly for the timely intervention. She acknowledged the longstanding challenge posed by the difficult terrain in the Afram Plains which had previously hindered the mobility of health staff. She stated that the new motorbikes would significantly enhance healthcare delivery across the district and pledged to ensure their proper maintenance to maximize their utility and lifespan.

📌📢:DISEC Conducts Emergency Assessment of Afram Plains Flooding, Urges Central Government Action to Avert Looming Crisis

In response to the escalating effects of seasonal rainfall and the consequent overflow of the Afram River, the District Security Council (DISEC) carried out an urgent inspection of the submerged Aframso bridge on Tuesday, 7th July 2026. This critical infrastructure, which serves as the only lifeline connecting over thirty thousand residents across communities including Birem, Balana, Kyeiase, Kroduase, Kyekyebon, and Aframso, has once again succumbed to perennial flooding; a recurring tragedy that intensifies with every rainy season.

The current situation has brought daily life to a standstill, severing access to essential services and paralyzing the movement of people and goods between the river's two banks. Alarming reports of maternal fatalities, widespread destruction of farmlands and crops, halted educational activities, and the inability to transport agricultural produce to market centres in the district capital underscore the human and economic toll of this persistent disaster. For the affected communities, this is not merely an inconvenience but a fight for survival.

Speaking on behalf of traditional leadership and the wider community, Nana Nkrumah Adassah, Sanahene of Aframso, painted a vivid picture of the community's anguish and called passionately on the central government to intervene decisively. He reiterated the urgent plea for the construction of a durable bridge across the river, alongside the development of the Nsuta-Birem road, a critical infrastructure that would restore hope, enhance livelihoods, and unlock the socio-economic potential of the Afram Plains.

In his address, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Somuah, traced the origins of this man-made crisis to the 2016 rechanneling of the river during the construction of a high-lift pumping station under the 3K Water Project; a development that inadvertently altered the river's natural flow and exacerbated flooding in the area. He affirmed that the Assembly has over the years explored various interventions, yet emphasized that a lasting solution now demands urgent financial and technical support from the central government to avert future catastrophes.

He also noted that the inspection was to evaluate the district's disaster preparedness and strengthen response mechanisms to mitigate the impact of flooding across all vulnerable communities.

Beyond the flood assessment, DISEC extended its oversight to monitor the progress of the ongoing construction of the new Aframso Health Centre, as well as an abandoned police post at Jeduako. At the health facility, the DCE engaged with staff and patients, offering reassurance of the government’s commitment to ensuring prompt completion and operationalization of the project. He also assured them on the renovation of staff quarters, recognizing the critical need to support health workers in delivering uninterrupted care.

Regarding the abandoned police post, the Hon. DCE declared the Assembly's resolve to adopt the structure as a legacy project, with plans to expand it into a fully operational police station that would serve Jeduako and its surrounding communities.

📌📢↩️: FREE PRIMARY HEALTHCARE PROGRAMME LAUNCHED IN THE SEKYERE CENTRAL DISTRICT.

On Thursday, 4th June 2026, the Sekyere Central District Health Directorate officially launched the Free Primary Health Care Programme, a government initiative aimed at removing financial barriers to essential health services.

Speaking at the event, the District Health Director, Madam Susana Nkrumah, described the programme as a bold and transformative policy to ensure no Ghanaian is denied primary healthcare due to financial constraints.

She announced that the District has been selected as one of the pilot districts nationwide, calling it both a great responsibility and a unique opportunity to demonstrate strong community and stakeholder collaboration.

Under Phase One, she explained that residents aged 18 and above will access annual screening services, including blood pressure and glucose checks, Body Mass Index assessment, breast cancer screening, mental health screening, and counselling on non-communicable diseases. Also, children and adolescents will benefit through school health programmes.

She clarified that the free primary healthcare programme does not replace the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) but complements it. While the new programme focuses on prevention, health promotion, and early disease detection, the NHIS continues to cover treatment and referrals. She urged all residents to maintain active NHIS membership for uninterrupted care and encouraged community members to take advantage of screenings at designated facilities such as CHPS compounds, health centres, polyclinics, health posts, and outreach programmes.

Presenting the keynote address, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Samuel Somuah stated that the initiative is not merely a health intervention but a national commitment to social justice, equity, and human development. He noted that the district's selection for the pilot demonstrates confidence in its ability to contribute to this national initiative.

Hon. Somuah stressed that healthcare is one of the most important investments a nation can make, as a healthy population drives economic growth, education, and sustainable development.

He acknowledged that financial constraints, geographical barriers, and limited early detection have denied many citizens access to basic healthcare and noted that this programme has been introduced to address those challenges.

The DCE applauded the programme's preventive care focus, which encourages early medical attention before diseases become difficult and expensive to manage. He assured the gathering of the District Assembly's full support and thanked the Ministry of Health, National Health Insurance Authority, the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, Development Partners, Traditional Authorities, and all stakeholders for making the programme possible.

The event was graced by Nananom, representatives of the Regional Health Directorate, health personnel, security agencies, and the general public.

The launch marks a significant step toward universal health coverage in Ghana, with Sekyere Central District poised to serve as a model for nationwide implementation.

📌📢: SEKYERE CENTRAL DISTRICT ASSEMBLY DISBURSES FUNDS AND ITEMS TO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The Sekyere Central District Assembly, led by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Samuel Somuah, has today disbursed various items and funds to members of the local chapter of the Ghana Federation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The initiative forms part of the government’s social intervention strategy aimed at economic empowerment and poverty reduction among PWDs in the district.

Speaking at the event, the President of the local PWD chapter, Mr. Kwaku Tawiah, urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the support received. He expressed profound gratitude to the Central Government and the District Assembly for their sustained commitment to the welfare of PWDs, particularly evident in recent years. He also acknowledged the Assembly’s support toward renovating the Disability Resource Centre and appealed for further assistance to complete all remaining works.

Mr. Emmanuel Haruna, Head of the Social Welfare and Community Development Department, explained that the disbursement is a government-led social intervention designed to foster economic self-reliance and alleviate poverty. He charged beneficiaries to ensure productive outcomes from the items and funds, emphasizing that the initiative’s success depends on tangible results from the resources provided.

The Chairman of the Disability Fund Management Committee, Hon. Philip Agyei, called on PWDs to share positive experiences of the intervention within their communities to encourage more eligible persons to enrol and benefit. He outlined the Committee’s approval process, which prioritizes identifying economic gaps in beneficiary communities and matching them with appropriate support. He further detailed the four beneficiary categories: Economic Support for PWDs, Support for Caregivers, Education and Training Support, and Medical Support for PWDs.

Hon. Samuel Somuah, reaffirmed that the disbursement fulfills a government pledge to economically empower PWDs. He thanked the Federation’s leadership for recognizing the Assembly’s efforts toward renovating the Disability Resource Centre and assured them of the timely completion of outstanding works. He stressed transparency in the selection process and commended the Committee for its impartiality, further guaranteeing that all initiatives under his tenure would consider persons regardless of political affiliation.

The DCE charged beneficiaries to effectively utilize the items received and announced that the Assembly would enforce monitoring checks to track progress on economic ventures. He assured other PWDs yet to benefit that they would be included in subsequent phases of the programme.

Items presented included container shops, agricultural inputs, fufu pounding machines, refrigerators and freezers, students’ mattresses, crutches, wheelchairs among others.
