EPA OBUASI AREA OFFICE CELEBRATES 2025 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY IN GRANDSTYLE

The annual World Environment Day Celebration 2025 was celebrated on the 5th of June.
This years celebration was marked with series of events including Essay writing competition, inter-school debate, waste segregation challenge among basic schools, "walk and pick" exercise and an innovation challenge for the entire community; all geared towards creating awareness on eding plastic pollution.

The WED was climaxed with a grand durbar to commemorate the day. This was attended by dignitaries within the Obuasi enclave including the Adansihene and Adansihemaa, Municipal Chief Executives and GES Directors of both Obuasi West and East Municipalities, GES Director of Adansi South District, Coordinating Registrar and Coordinating Dean of the KNUST Obuasi campus and thousands of students from Basic schools and SHS within the Adansi Area.

As the national theme indicates "Repurpose Plastic Use", the entire community was tasked with an innovation challenge, resulting in the use of waste plastic materials to create reusable materials for the benefit of the society. Notable among the materials exhibited under the innovative challenge included a modern waste segregator machine made by the Obuasi Senior High Technical School (O' SECTEC) and a Smart plastic waste bin made by Asare Bediako Senior High School (ASBEK), all made out of waste plastics.

Awards/Prizes were presented to individuals, groups and schools who exhibited innovative and useful materials made from waste plastics and also participated in the essay writing and debate.

Mr. Prempeh Adarkwa Yiadom, The Director for EPA Obuasi Area Office indicated "that plastic in itself is not the problem, but its use and management". He therefore urged all gathered to rethink plastic pollution and put an action now in converting waste plastics into useful materials. He further admonished the populace to opt for reusable plastic materials instead of single use plastics.
