Dear Director General,
Subject: Concerns Regarding BECE Registration Costs, Specifically Photo Expenses
I trust this letter finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of concern related to the registration process for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in some parts of our country.
It has come to my attention that the cost of photo-taking during the BECE registration process has escalated, reaching up to 80 Ghana cedis in certain district.
This appears to be a considerable financial burden for many families, particularly those in less affluent areas in this era of free quality and accessible education in Ghana.
It is quite interesting to note that, as some districts in the Volta Region charge some Ghc20.00 others charge up to Ghc100.00 in same region.
While I understand the necessity of capturing student photos for identification purposes, the substantial increase in associated costs raises questions about accessibility and fairness since what goes into the processes that leads to the photo taking and what the said amount is meant to be spent on.
While I don't want to talk about corruption in this regard, it is just in place for the public to be informed what the cost goes to cover since the claim of Government charges are being stated being the reason for the high cost in some districts in the Volta Region.
Education is a fundamental right, and ensuring that examination processes remain affordable is crucial for promoting equal opportunities among students, irrespective of their socio-economic background.
I kindly request that the Ghana Education Service thoroughly investigates this matter to ascertain the reasons behind such elevated costs. Additionally, I propose exploring measures to standardize or reduce these expenses, taking into consideration the economic diversity of our communities.
