LETS EMPOWER DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES TO DEAL WITH BUSH FIRE MENACE, HON.FRANK ANNOH-DOMPREH ADVOCATES ON THE FLOOR OF PARLIAMENT.
The Honourable Majority chief Whip of the 8th parliament, Hon.Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Member of Parliament(MP) for Nsawam Adoagyiri, has advocated for
the need to strengthen district assemblies to help deal with the menace of bush fire.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, he explained that a better state thrives on stronger institutions, better men who have gone through capacity building to equip themselves to be able to deal with challenges.
The 1983 bushfire, he said, gave an ample lessons that led to the promulgation of the PNDC Law 47(1983) and its subsequent PNDC Law 229(1990) that set the tone to deal with the threats of bush fire.
"Mr. Speaker, there is no need for the promulgation of new legislation and building new institution because these laws have given responsibilities to the district assemblies to wholesomely deal with such menace that has become a National disaster" he added.
The MP cited the Australian method of establishing Bushfire Safety Authority and championed that, a lesson could be drawn from it and not necessarily going through the same path.
‘’Apart from the destruction of floral and forna, bushfire is a threat to food security" he said.
As part of the measures to curb the spate of the menace, he said Department of Agriculture should re-engage Extension officers by taking them through capacity building to help deal with the situation.
He further championed the encouragement of pasture growth and the empowerment of Farmer Based Organizations (FBO's) as measures to overcome the challenge.
He called on District Assemblies and the general public to devote their time focusing on the campaign to deal with the menace of bushfire.
