Building Stronger Synergies for Responsible Land Use 🌍⛏️

The Western Regional Directorate of LUSPA engaged the Survey and Mapping Division of the Commission in Western region.

The visit is aimed at strengthening inter-agency collaboration in land use planning and management.

Key highlights from the discussion centered on three main areas:

1. Institutional collaboration: We emphasized the need to strengthen partnerships and coordination between institutions to ensure aligned goals and shared accountability.

2. Addressing key challenges: Critical obstacles currently affecting progress of work was discussed with practical strategies to overcome them.

3. Increasing work efficiency in the future: We explored ways to streamline processes, adopt better tools, and improve workflows to enhance productivity going forward.

This partnership is key to promoting sustainable development, ensuring responsible Local plan and cadastral plan regime, and improving coordination for the benefit of our communities.

Strengthening Partnerships for Sustainable Land Use 🌍

The Western Regional Directorate of LUSPA paid a working visit to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) as part of ongoing efforts to deepen collaboration and enhance coordination in land use planning permission and management regime.

We aim to foster efficiency in the administration of environmental and planning permission in accordance with LI 2481, the fees and services Legislation in the Western Region and are optimistic that this step is in the right direction to achieving this goal.

This engagement additionally reinforces our shared commitment to ensuring sustainable development, effective regulation, and improved service delivery within the region.

WORKING VISIT TO SHAMA DISTRICT ASSEMBLY

As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen effective collaboration and enhance service delivery, a team from LUSPA undertook a working visit to Shama on 5th March, 2026

The visit provided an opportunity to engage key stakeholders, assess ongoing activities, and explore practical ways to improve coordination at the district level. Discussions focused on building stronger partnerships, addressing operational challenges, and aligning strategies to achieve shared goals.

WESTERN REGION INAUGURATES METRO MUNICIPAL AND DISTRICT SPATIAL PLANNING AND TECHNICAL SUB COMMITTEES

The Western Regional Directorate of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), under the leadership of the Ag. Regional Director, Pln. Ama Akyire A. Ferkah (Mrs), in collaboration with the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC), successfully organised a two-day inaugural programme for all Spatial Planning and Technical Sub committee members in the Western Region.

The ceremonies held on the Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd of December were held at Tarkwa and Agona Nkwanta respectively, marking a significant step towards strengthening spatial planning structures and enhancing institutional coordination across the region.

During the ceremony, there was a brief orientation for members on the membership composition, mandates or functions of the committee, modes and frequency of organizing meetings as well as appeal processes. This was done by Pln. Mrs. Ferkah ( Ama Quaicoe Ferkah )

An overwhelming number of 214 MMD SPC/TSC representatives from all fourteen (14) Metro Municipal and District Assemblies were in attendance.

The Hon Regional Minister, Hon Joseph Nelson led Committee members to administer the oath, delivered his speech as well as tasked committee members to be good environmental steward in driving forward thinking spatial planning in their respective Assemblies.

Also in attendance was the Chief Director, Madam Rachel Fosua Sarpong and all Metro Municipal and District Chief Executives.

LUSPA Western Region successfully facilitated a GIZ-sponsored capacity-building workshop for the Technical Sub and Spatial Planning Committee teams of three partner MMDAs in the Western Region.

The beneficiary assemblies were:
📍 Wassa Amenfi West Assembly
📍 Ellembele District Assembly and
📍 Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly

These sessions focused on building the members capacity in the areas of laws, accompanying legislation or policies, and guidelines.

Additionally, the training sought to strengthen technical skills, improve planning processes, procedures and enhance institutional capacity across the participating assemblies.

Empowering the front-liners of development control

The LUSPA Western Regional Directorate, in collaboration with the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC), organized a capacity-building workshop for Planning and Building Inspectorate Units across the region on 18th November 2025.

The session equipped officers with updated knowledge, tools, and best practices to enhance monitoring, strengthen development control, and ensure orderly and compliant physical development within the Western Region.

This is in accordance with the legislation, standards and guidelines of the Authority.

Building capacity, strengthening planning practice is the goal.

The Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), Western Region joined the Head office of the Authority with sponsorship from GIZ Ghana to hold a comprehensive orientation session for selected Spatial Planning Committee members both at the Regional and Metro Municipal and District level.

This orientation was held in connection with ongoing efforts to sensitize all Regional members on two important spatial planning documents which are the revised Spatial planning Manual and Guidelines for Zoning and planning standards.

The session brought together planners and key stakeholders to deepen understanding and ensure consistent application of the updated standards.

As primary implementors of these documents at the RCC and MMDA levels, it would serve as guide to the every day decision-making on land us3 and Spatial Planning management aimed at promoting sustainable development.

This orientation forms part of LUSPA’s ongoing commitment to improving land-use decision-making, promoting orderly development, and enhancing the quality of spatial planning nationwide.

Strengthening collaboration for better spatial development!

The Western Regional division of the Local Government Association of Physical Planners (LOGSSAP), led by the Ag. Regional Director of LUSPA, Pln. Mrs. Ama A. A. Ferkah paid a courtesy call on the Hon. Regional Minister on 24th June 2025.

Discussions centered on deepening partnerships, enhancing coordination between planning institutions, and advancing professional support for effective spatial planning across the region.

The Hon. Regional Minister, Hon. Nelson, commended the initiative and re-affirmed government’s commitment to supporting planning institutions in promoting sustainable and orderly development.

A new chapter begins!

The inauguration of the 2025–2028 RSPC Members.

LUSPA, Western Regional directorate has officially inaugurated the 2025–2028 Regional Spatial Planning Committee (RSPC) on Monday, 16th June 2025.

During the ceremony, the Chairman—Hon. Regional Minister—expressed deep concern about the increasing cases of flooding across the region.

He emphasized the critical role of strict supervision and responsible permitting in preventing developments in unauthorized areas.

LUSPA remains committed to strengthening planning compliance and safeguarding our communities through effective spatial management.

Empowering Planning Professionals:

A two-day intensive training on GIS tools for physical planners and technical officers from all 14 MMDAs.

The training organized by LUSPA in collaboration with the Western Regional Coordinating Council, sought to enhance spatial planning and decision-making capabilities in the region.

The workshop built on initial training held in March, 2023 focused on using GIS to generate contours.

It aimed to further enhance capacity of Physical Planning officers in utilising GIS technologies for more effective Spatial Planning.

We believe that this training will be invaluable in advancing the planning and development processes within their respective Assemblies.
