📍 FINAL DAY: LUSPA COMPLIANCE MONITORING EXERCISE – WESTERN REGION

Yesterday, Friday, 4th September 2026, marked the final day of the Regional Compliance Monitoring Exercise of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA). 🎯

The exercise concluded with:

🔹 Team A visiting the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipal Assembly
🔹 Team B visiting the Amenfi Central Municipal Assembly

The teams engaged the respective Assemblies to assess physical planning operations, development control and the development permitting process, in line with LUSPA’s mandate under the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925).

Over the course of the exercise, the teams visited various MMDAs across the Western Region, providing an opportunity to assess compliance, identify challenges and strengthen collaboration towards improved planning and development control.

Day 4 is here! 🚀

The Regional Compliance Monitoring Exercise of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) continues across the Western Region.

Team A visited the Nzema East Municipal Assembly and the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly as part of the ongoing monitoring exercise.

The team engaged the respective Assemblies to assess physical planning operations, development control and the development permitting process, in line with LUSPA’s mandate under the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925).

The exercise continues to provide an avenue to assess compliance, identify operational challenges and strengthen collaboration with MMDAs towards orderly, coordinated and sustainable human settlement development.

Day 3 is here! 🚀

The National Compliance Monitoring Exercise of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) continued today in the Western Region with Team A visiting both the Mpohor District Assembly and the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly.

The team engaged the two Assemblies as part of efforts to monitor physical planning operations, development control and the development permitting process, in line with LUSPA’s mandate under the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925).

The exercise provides an opportunity to assess compliance, identify operational challenges and strengthen collaboration with the MMDAs towards effective spatial planning and orderly, coordinated and sustainable human settlement development.

Day 2 is here! 🚀

The Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) continues its Regional Compliance Monitoring Exercise across the Western Region, as the two monitoring teams visited two Assemblies on the second day.

🔹 Team A visited the Shama District Assembly, while
🔹 Team B visited the Wassa East District Assembly.

The exercise, being undertaken in line with LUSPA’s mandate under the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925) and L.I. 2384, focuses on assessing compliance in physical planning operations, development control and the development permitting process.

The teams engaged the respective Assemblies to review planning and permitting procedures, assess existing practices, identify challenges and provide guidance towards strengthening effective spatial planning and development management.

Through continued collaboration with MMDAs, LUSPA remains committed to promoting orderly, coordinated and sustainable human settlements across the Western Region.

📍 LUSPA Compliance Monitoring Exercise – Western Region

Following a courtesy call on the Western Regional Minister, the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) commenced its Regional Compliance Monitoring Exercise yesterday 31st August, 2026 with visits to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) and the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA).

The exercise is being undertaken in accordance with LUSPA’s mandate under the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925), particularly to monitor and provide guidance to MMDAs on physical planning and development control operations.

Team A, led by Deputy Chief Executive, Mr Chapman Owusu-Sekyere, visited the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA). The team included Mrs Ama Akyire Akyinba Ferkah, Acting Regional Director, LUSPA Western Regional Directorate, Mr Jeffrey Kojo Anaman and Mr Michael Enninful

The monitoring exercise focused on physical planning operations, development control, and the development permitting process, with the objective of assessing compliance with Act 925 , L.I. 2384 as well as other relevant laws identifying operational challenges, and providing guidance to strengthen planning and development management at the local level.

Building stronger capacities for sustainable spatial planning!

From 21st–24th July 2026, GIZ Ghana , in collaboration with the Western Regional Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (WR LUSPA), continued its technical support to the Wassa Amenfi West Municipal Assembly, Asankrangwa, in the preparation of its Structure Plan.

The facilitation team, comprising Mr. Naku Adama (GIZ), Miss Ruth A. Sarpong Boateng, and Mr. Gilbert Atiemo Saforo (WR LUSPA), was warmly received by the Municipal Physical Planning Officer, Mr. Theophilus Akye, who ensured his planning team was fully prepared for the four-day technical training.

The training focused on Step 4 and Step 5 of the structure planning process, where participants worked collaboratively to develop a shared vision statement, formulate strategic goals and SMART objectives, and prepare alternative spatial development scenarios to guide the municipality's future growth. Discussions emphasized aligning the vision with local development priorities, translating aspirations into actionable planning objectives, and evaluating different development scenarios based on sustainability, feasibility, and stakeholder needs before identifying a preferred planning direction.
The engagement marks another important milestone in strengthening the Assembly's capacity to prepare a comprehensive, evidence-based Structure Plan that will support orderly, resilient, and inclusive development for Wassa Amenfi West.

Strengthening Collaboration for Sustainable Spatial Planning

The Western Regional Directorate of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) successfully held its 10th Physical Planners' Meeting, bringing together Physical Planners from all 14 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the Western Region.

The meeting served as an important platform for participants to exchange ideas, discuss emerging spatial planning and development challenges, share best practices, and explore practical solutions to improve planning and development management within the region.

The meeting was further enriched by the presence of the Western Regional Lands Officer (RLO),Surveyor Nana Eugene Asante Boateng and the Regional Surveyor, Surveyor Isaac Quaison whose valuable contributions highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration in promoting efficient land administration and sustainable spatial development.

We equally used the opportunity to welcome the newly posted Physical Planning Department Heads to the western region.

Together, we remain committed to fostering coordinated planning, protecting our environment, and building well-planned, resilient communities for the future.

BUILDING RESILIENCE THROUGH KNOWLEDGE: UNDERSTANDING LANDSLIDE RISKS IN THE WESTERN REGION 🌍⛰️

As part of the 12th Regional Spatial Planning Committee (RSPC) Meeting, members received an insightful presentation from the Western Regional Director of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) on the growing threat of landslides in the Western Region.

The presentation highlighted the major causes of landslides, including prolonged and intense rainfall, unstable slopes, indiscriminate land development, deforestation, quarrying, illegal mining activities, and poor drainage systems. Members were also taken through the landslide-prone hotspots across the region, emphasizing the need for proactive planning and strict adherence to spatial planning regulations to safeguard lives, infrastructure, and the environment.

This engagement comes at a crucial time, as recent heavy rains have resulted in floods and landslide incidents across parts of Ghana, with the Western Region recording significant impacts, including displaced residents and damaged infrastructure. These events reinforce the importance of integrating geological risk assessments into land use planning and development decisions.

The Regional Spatial Planning Committee remains committed to fostering collaboration among institutions to strengthen disaster risk reduction, promote sustainable development, and build resilient communities throughout the Western Region.

Together, we can create safer settlements through informed planning and responsible development.

📍 Stakeholders Validate Wassa Amenfi West Structure Plan for a Sustainable Future

On 21st June 2026, the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), Western Regional Directorate in collaboration with GiZ Ghana successfully facilitated a Stakeholders' Validation Meeting for the Wassa Amenfi West (Asankragua) Structure Plan.

This forms part of the GIZ Ghana support for the Participatory Accountability Intergrity for resilient Democracy (PAIReD) Program which seeks to prepare structure plans for twenty ( 20 ) Metro Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAS) in Ghana.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Municipal Assembly, traditional authorities, sector agencies, community leaders, and other development partners to review and validate the proposed Structure Plan.

The validation exercise provided a platform for participants to examine the planning proposals, offer valuable inputs, and ensure that the final Structure Plan reflects the aspirations and development priorities of the municipality. This collaborative approach reinforces LUSPA's commitment to inclusive, resilient, and sustainable spatial planning.

Together, we are laying the foundation for an orderly, well-planned, and prosperous Wassa Amenfi West.
