FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONCERNED GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT BACKS DR. MAHAMUDU BAWUMIA’S CALL FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE IN ABLEKUMA NORTH
The Concerned Grassroots Movement fully supports the bold and necessary call made by the former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, following the unfortunate and violent incidents that occurred during the electoral rerun in Ablekuma North.
Dr. Bawumia was present in person at Ablekuma North and witnessed the troubling scenes for himself. His message is one not just of concern but of first-hand experience, as a leader committed to peace, justice, and the protection of Ghana’s democratic values.
Below is his full statement, which we, as a movement, endorse and stand firmly behind:
Fellow Ghanaians,
This morning, I was present at Ablekuma North during the electoral rerun and personally witnessed disturbing acts of violence. This is not the democracy we want to see in Ghana.
Our supporters, including women and key party officials such as Hon. Akua Afriyieh, Hon. Hawa Koomson, and the NPP Deputy National Organizer, were attacked right before my eyes. All of this happened in the presence of security personnel who, regrettably, were unable to protect them.
It is especially troubling that while the police had earlier stated they could not provide security for the collation of just three pink sheets, they were able to provide security for elections in 19 polling stations, yet could not prevent these attacks.
Ghana’s democracy must be built on peace, fairness, and security for all. We do not want to reach a point where political parties feel they must provide their own security because the state has failed in its duty. That would take us down a dangerous path.
Let me be clear, those responsible for these violent acts were captured on video. I call on His Excellency the President, the leadership of the security agencies, and all relevant authorities to take immediate action. The perpetrators must be brought to justice. It is only through firm and decisive action that we can prevent such incidents in the future.
To those involved in these violent acts, let me assure you, should you not be brought to book now, we will not forget. You will be held accountable, no matter how long it takes. We will not forget what has happened.
I have always stood for peace. You will recall that during the 2024 general elections, I chose to concede defeat early in order to protect Ghana’s peace and stability. I did so not for personal interest, but because I put Ghana first. Today, I stand by that same conviction.
We want peace in Ghana. We want a democracy where elections strengthen our nation, not divide or harm us.
Let us all work together to safeguard the peace and democracy that Ghana deserves.
May God bless our homeland Ghana.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
As the Concerned Grassroots Movement, we stand by Dr. Bawumia’s message and leadership. We echo his call for immediate action and for justice to be served. Ghana’s democracy must be protected, and those who seek to undermine it through violence or intimidation must face the full consequences of the law.
We call on all stakeholders-the government, the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and political leaders - to act swiftly and decisively in addressing this matter to restore public confidence in our democratic processes.
Signed:
Concerned Grassroots Movement
