The Mayor of Tamale, Hon. Abubakari Adam Takoro, on behalf of the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, has called on residents of the Northern Region to uphold peace, religious tolerance and unity as Muslims across the region marked this yearโ€™s Eid-ul Adha celebration on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

The main regional celebration was held at the Jubilee Park in Tamale and brought together Islamic clerics, traditional rulers, government officials, heads of security services, the media and hundreds of Muslim faithful who gathered to observe the sacred festival of sacrifice. Simultaneously, the Municipal Chief Executive for Sagnarigu, Hon. Abdulai Imoro Gong, also represented the Regional Minister at the Anbariya Islamic School during a separate Eid prayer gathering.

Delivering the address on behalf of the Regional Minister, Hon. Takoro conveyed warm Eid greetings from the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, and the Northern Regional Coordinating Council to Muslims across the region. He described Eid-ul Adha as a significant occasion that symbolizes sacrifice, obedience, compassion and devotion to Allah.

He also extended the Presidentโ€™s congratulatory message to Ghanaian pilgrims currently in Mecca for successfully completing this yearโ€™s Hajj pilgrimage. He prayed for Allahโ€™s acceptance of their supplications and asked for their safe return home in good health.

According to him, government remains committed to ensuring a seamless, accessible and dignified Hajj process for all Muslims who wish to undertake the spiritual journey. He disclosed that this yearโ€™s airlifting of pilgrims from the Tamale International Airport was smooth and incident-free.

โ€œIn all, a total of Three Thousand and Seventy-four (3,074) pilgrims were successfully airlifted from the Tamale International Airport to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage,โ€ he stated, expressing hope that all pilgrims would safely return home after fulfilling their religious obligations.

Hon. Takoro explained that Eid-ul Adha serves as a reminder of the unwavering obedience and submission of Prophet Ibrahim to the command of Allah. He noted that the story of sacrifice also reflects the boundless mercy of Allah and teaches Muslims the importance of gratitude, generosity and compassion towards one another.

He urged Muslims and the public to use the occasion to support the needy, strengthen family and community ties, and promote peaceful coexistence among people of different religious and ethnic backgrounds. According to him, the celebration should also inspire collective efforts toward building a society where every citizen enjoys peace, inclusion and equal opportunities.

The Mayor further stressed the need to preserve the peace being enjoyed in the Northern Region, cautioning against actions capable of fueling insecurity and communal conflicts. He appealed to residents to embrace dialogue and understanding in resolving disputes in order to safeguard the development gains made in the region.

โ€œYou will agree with me that without peace, we will not be here today. Peace is critical to the progress and development of our communities and the region at large,โ€ he emphasized.

Touching on social challenges confronting the region, Hon. Takoro expressed concern over the increasing abuse of illicit drugs, particularly tramadol, among the youth. He described the menace as a growing threat that is destroying the talents and future of many young people in the region.

He therefore called on parents, religious leaders, traditional authorities and all stakeholders to intensify public education on the dangers of substance abuse and encourage young people to stay away from drugs.

โ€œI think that this is the biggest fight we are currently confronted with as a region and we must come all out to ensure that we fight it,โ€ he noted.

He concluded by urging Ghanaians to remain tolerant and respectful of one anotherโ€™s religious beliefs in order to preserve harmony and national unity.

Hon. Takoro finally prayed for Allahโ€™s blessings, healing for the sick, forgiveness of shortcomings and lasting peace and prosperity for the people of the Northern Region and Ghana as a whole.

โ€œEid Mubarak to you and your families, and may the Almighty Allah bless us all,โ€ he said.

The Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting orderly, sustainable and well-coordinated development across the region through effective spatial planning and land use management.

This came to light during an orientation workshop on the revised Spatial Planning Documents held on Tuesday, 26th May, 2026 at the Residency Round Pavilion in Tamale. The workshop brought together officials from the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), Regional Spatial Planning Committee members, Heads of State Institutions, representatives of professional bodies, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), development planners and members of the media.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, the Chief Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, Sumaila Ewuntomah Abudu, described spatial planning as a critical tool for translating development visions into orderly, sustainable and equitable physical realities.

He noted that the revised planning documents, namely the Zoning Guidelines and Planning Standards as well as the Manual for Preparation of Spatial Plans, are intended to strengthen efficiency in land use planning and ensure the effective utilization of land resources within communities across the region and the country at large.

According to him, the revised documents have been aligned with key national legal frameworks including the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925), the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Regulations, 2019 (L.I. 2384).

Mr. Abudu emphasized that the alignment of the revised documents with existing legal frameworks is not only a statutory requirement but also demonstrates the collective commitment of stakeholders towards governing land use planning processes with clarity, efficiency and foresight.

He further explained that the revisions carefully integrate contemporary physical development trends and evolving land use dynamics, which continue to shape communities and landscapes through economic, social and environmental changes.

โ€œOur landscapes and communities are living entities continuously shaped by economic, social and environmental forces. The updated guidelines and manual therefore serve as essential tools to guide local authorities, planners, developers and stakeholders in managing growth and change in a manner that fosters sustainable human settlement,โ€ he stated.

The Chief Director stressed that the workshop was designed to enhance knowledge sharing and strengthen the capacity of stakeholders to ensure consistency and effectiveness in spatial planning and zoning practices across the various Municipal and District Assemblies within the region.

He encouraged participants to actively engage in discussions, share practical field experiences and seek clarity on the application of the revised guidelines to enable effective implementation at the local level.

Mr. Abudu reiterated the commitment of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council to supporting spatial planning initiatives that promote good governance, environmental sustainability and socio-economic development.

He urged all stakeholders to utilize the revised spatial planning documents with diligence, transparency and renewed dedication in order to build a region that serves as a model of structured and sustainable growth.

According to Mr. Patrick Apraku of Land Use Spatial Planning Authority, spatial planning remains a critical tool for sustainable development as it provides a clear framework for the efficient use of land, effective management of natural resources, coordinated infrastructure delivery and the creation of inclusive, resilient and livable communities. He stressed that with Ghanaโ€™s rapidly growing population and increasing development pressures, especially within urban centers, there is an urgent need for more coordinated, participatory and responsive planning approaches to effectively guide development and manage human settlements.

Mr. Apraku further explained that the revised planning documents were developed in line with the Land Use Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925) and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Regulations, 2019 (L.I. 2384), which mandate LUSPA to prepare spatial plans, strengthen institutional capacities and issue guidelines to ensure compliance with national planning standards. He noted that the revision became necessary to align the documents with current legal, policy and development frameworks while addressing calls for greater clarity, consistency, standardization and stakeholder participation in land use planning processes. He added that the revised spatial planning documents were officially launched by the in November 2025 and have since been distributed to Regional Coordinating Councils, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as well as other key stakeholders across the country.

The workshop formed part of efforts aimed at equipping planners, technical officers and relevant stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and practical understanding required for the successful implementation of the revised spatial planning framework across the Northern Region.

The Environmental Protection Authority has officially announced a nationwide ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of polystyrene foam products, commonly known as โ€œStyrofoamโ€ or โ€œtakeaway packs,โ€ effective 1st January 2027.

The announcement follows a policy declaration made by John Dramani Mahama during the 2025 World Environment Day celebration on 5th June 2025, where government outlined plans to phase out polystyrene products as part of efforts to tackle plastic pollution and protect the environment.

In a statement issued on 25th May 2026, the EPA said the directive forms part of broader national efforts to improve environmental sanitation, safeguard public health, promote sustainable development, and ensure compliance with environmental standards across the country.

According to the Authority, the ban will apply to all forms of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam products used for commercial and domestic activities. These include food packaging containers, takeaway packs, disposable cups and plates, foam packs used by restaurants and food vendors, ceiling and insulation materials made from polystyrene foam, foam mattresses and bedding materials, as well as packaging and cushioning materials.

The EPA, however, clarified that the prohibition will not affect EPS products specifically intended for medical, scientific, laboratory, and diagnostic purposes, subject to regulatory approval.

The Authority further directed all manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, hospitality operators, institutions, and users of polystyrene products to begin transitioning to safer, reusable, recyclable, and environmentally friendly alternatives ahead of the implementation date.

As part of preparations toward the enforcement of the directive, the EPA disclosed that it will embark on nationwide stakeholder engagements, public education campaigns, and technical consultations during the transition period leading to January 2027. The Authority also indicated that it will intensify compliance monitoring, regulatory inspections, and enforcement readiness to ensure full adherence to the ban.

The EPA noted that it will collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), customs officials, port authorities, and industry regulators to guarantee effective implementation of the nationwide ban.

The Authority has therefore appealed to the general public to support the initiative by adopting sustainable consumption habits and embracing environmentally friendly packaging alternatives.

Describing environmental protection as a collective responsibility, the EPA emphasized that the policy is aimed at securing a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for Ghana.

A high-level regional stakeholder engagement meeting on the registration of children between the ages of six (6) and fourteen (14) years under the National Identification System has been held at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) Conference Hall in Tamale on Wednesday, 20th May, 2026.

The meeting, organized by the National Identification Authority, brought together key government institutions and stakeholders to deliberate on strategies aimed at ensuring a successful and smooth registration exercise across the Northern Region.

The delegation from the national headquarters of the National Identification Authority was led by the Deputy Executive Secretary, Alhaji Mohammed Naziru Seidu, who explained that the stakeholder engagement formed part of preparations toward the nationwide registration of children within the targeted age bracket onto the Ghana Card system.

According to him, the discussions centered on practical ways of conducting the registration exercise effectively, intensifying public education and information dissemination, as well as ensuring adequate security arrangements throughout the exercise.

Alhaji Naziru disclosed that the registration exercise has already commenced in the Volta and Oti Regions, where over eighty thousand (80,000) children have so far been successfully registered. He noted that the Northern Region is the next target area and is tentatively scheduled to begin the exercise from 11th June, 2026.

He further revealed that the registration process in the Northern Region would largely be school-based, with registration teams expected to move to various basic schools across the region to register eligible children. He stressed that the approach was intended to make the process more accessible, efficient, and convenient for parents, guardians, and school authorities.

The delegation emphasized the importance of collaboration among state institutions, educational authorities, security agencies, health officials, and community leaders in ensuring a hitch-free exercise. They appealed to stakeholders to support public sensitization efforts to encourage parents and guardians to make their children available for registration.

Participants at the meeting actively contributed ideas and recommendations on how to ensure the successful implementation of the exercise in the region. Key among the participants were the Regional Police Commander, the Regional Information Officer, the Regional Director of National Commission for Civic Education, the Regional Education Director, officials from the Ghana Health Service, the Regional Director of the Department of Children, as well as representatives from the Northern Regional Coordinating Council.

The stakeholders highlighted the need for effective coordination, community engagement, security deployment, and sustained public education to avoid misinformation and ensure maximum participation during the exercise.

Speaking on behalf of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, the Director of Administration, Abdul Rahaman Ahmed Baba, expressed appreciation to the National Identification Authority for the initiative.

He described the registration exercise as a significant national intervention that would help strengthen Ghanaโ€™s identification system and improve access to essential services for children. He assured the Authority of the full support and cooperation of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council toward the successful implementation of the exercise.

Mr. Abdul Rahaman Ahmed Baba further urged all stakeholders to work collectively to ensure that eligible children across the region are captured under the national identification database, stressing that the exercise would contribute immensely to planning and service delivery in sectors such as education, healthcare, and social protection.

The meeting ended with a shared commitment among stakeholders to intensify awareness creation and institutional collaboration ahead of the commencement of the registration exercise in the Northern Region next month.

The high-level delegation, made up of eminent traditional rulers, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives(MMDCEs), and senior officials from the Northern Region, visited the Presidency to reaffirm their support for governmentโ€™s development agenda and strengthen the longstanding partnership between traditional authorities and the state in promoting peace, unity, and socio-economic development.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Ali Adolf John expressed profound appreciation to President Mahama for granting the delegation audience and commended the President for his commitment to inclusive governance, national unity, and accelerated development across the country.

The Regional Minister noted that the visit underscored the strong collaboration between the chieftaincy institution and government, emphasizing that traditional leaders continue to play a critical role in maintaining peace, resolving conflicts, mobilizing communities, preserving cultural values, and supporting development initiatives across the Northern Region.

Hon. Ali Adolf John congratulated President Mahama on his leadership and efforts aimed at resetting the countryโ€™s economy and restoring hope among Ghanaians. According to him, the people of the Northern Region remain grateful for the governmentโ€™s continuous attention to infrastructure development, healthcare delivery, agriculture, education, water expansion projects, and road improvement interventions within the region.

He further acknowledged governmentโ€™s commitment towards improving the living conditions of the people through strategic investments and social intervention programmes, particularly within underserved communities in Northern Ghana.

The Regional Minister stressed that the chiefs of the Northern Region remain committed to supporting government policies and initiatives that seek to deepen national cohesion, ensure stability, and accelerate development.

He appealed to the President to sustain investments in critical sectors such as roads, irrigation, agriculture, youth employment, healthcare, and education, stressing that accelerated development in Northern Ghana would significantly contribute to national progress, food security, and economic transformation.

Hon. Ali Adolf John also reiterated the readiness of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council to continue working closely with traditional authorities, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, development partners, and all relevant stakeholders to advance governmentโ€™s transformational agenda in the region.

The Minister emphasized that continuous engagement between government and traditional rulers remains essential in strengthening participatory governance, promoting mutual trust, and ensuring peaceful coexistence among communities.

President John Dramani Mahama, in his remarks, warmly welcomed the delegation and commended the chiefs for their invaluable contributions towards peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and development in the Northern Region and the country at large.

The President emphasized that chiefs remain indispensable to nation-building, anchored in legitimacy, culture, and trust, and therefore must be fully integrated into governance, project monitoring, and community development efforts across the country.

Under the governmentโ€™s Reset Agenda, President Mahama announced plans to institutionalize collaboration between traditional authorities and District Assemblies through regular coordination meetings and joint monitoring of critical infrastructure projects to enhance transparency, accountability, efficiency, and service delivery.

He further highlighted major interventions being undertaken across the Northern Region, including investments in agriculture, roads, education, healthcare, water systems, and rural electrification, describing the region as a key driver of Ghanaโ€™s transformation and food security agenda.

President Mahama also called for intensified collaboration between chiefs, youth groups, religious leaders, and security agencies to combat the growing menace of drug abuse among the youth, stressing the need for collective national action to safeguard the future of young people.

On healthcare infrastructure, the President assured the delegation of governmentโ€™s commitment to prioritizing the completion of key projects, including the psychiatric hospital in Mion and the establishment of a new cardio center in Tamale to improve specialized healthcare delivery in Northern Ghana.

The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, has reaffirmed governmentโ€™s commitment to strengthening partnerships with civil society organisations and development actors to promote inclusive growth, digital transformation, and sustainable development across the Northern Region.

The Minister made the remarks in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Northern Regional Economic Development Planning Officer (REDPO), Mr. Isaac Mwangu, during the launch of the 2025 Annual Report of Savana Signatures held on Thursday, 14th May 2026, at the organisationโ€™s office in Tamale.

The event brought together development partners, representatives of government institutions, traditional authorities, civil society actors, members of the media, and other distinguished guests to reflect on the organisationโ€™s achievements and impact over the past year.

Speaking on behalf of the Regional Minister, Mr. Isaac Mwangu described the report, titled โ€œA Defining Year of Resilience, Innovation, and People-Centred Action,โ€ as timely and reflective of the realities many institutions and communities in Ghana faced in 2025 amid economic and funding challenges.

According to him, despite disruptions and growing socio-economic pressures, organisations such as Savana Signatures remained resilient and continued to support vulnerable communities through innovative and impactful interventions.

He noted that the launch of the report was not only about presenting achievements, but also about celebrating resilience, recognising partnerships, and honouring the lives transformed through deliberate and people-centred interventions, particularly through the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Mr. Mwangu commended Savana Signatures for sustaining its commitment to inclusive development through programmes focused on Human Capital Development, Sustainable Environmental Management and Resilience, Social Inclusion, as well as Technology, Innovation, and Training.

He particularly praised the organisationโ€™s focus on empowering young people, women, and vulnerable groups through digital inclusion initiatives, stating that such efforts align with governmentโ€™s broader vision of accelerating Ghanaโ€™s digital transformation agenda.

He highlighted key interventions undertaken by the organisation, including Girls in ICT training programmes, ICT support and pedagogy training for teachers, digital skills development for women entrepreneurs, and youth empowerment initiatives aimed at preparing young people for opportunities within the digital economy.

According to him, these initiatives contribute significantly to skills development, gender equality, and inclusive participation in economic and civic life in line with Ghanaโ€™s National Gender Policy Framework for 2025โ€“2034.

The REDPO further lauded Savana Signatures for promoting social accountability and inclusion through initiatives such as the Transport Sector Improvement Project and the โ€œYour Voice 4 Matterโ€ initiative, which provide platforms for citizen engagement and democratic participation.

He stressed that sustainable development can only be achieved when communities are treated not merely as beneficiaries, but as active participants in shaping their own future through local capacity building and inclusive engagement.

Mr. Mwangu reiterated governmentโ€™s commitment to collaboration in addressing key challenges such as unemployment, climate vulnerability, digital exclusion, and limited access to quality education and information, especially within underserved communities.

He congratulated the leadership, staff, volunteers, partners, and beneficiaries of Savana Signatures for their dedication and officially launched the Savana Signatures 2025 Annual Report on behalf of the Northern Regional Minister.
