REST IN POWER, YA-NA ABUKARI II β€” A REIGN OF RECONCILIATION

Today, Dagbon mourns the passing of its Overlord, Ya-Na Abukari II, the 41st king of one of Ghana's oldest and most influential traditional kingdoms. His death marks the end of a reign that will be remembered as a turning point in Dagbon's history.

Enskinned in January 2019, Ya-Na Abukari II inherited a kingdom still healing from a 16-year chieftaincy dispute that had left the Yendi skin vacant since 2002 and deeply divided the Abudu and Andani royal gates. Through patience, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to peace, he became the living symbol of that reconciliation β€” restoring traditional ceremonies that had been suspended for over a decade and rebuilding trust across a fractured kingdom.

Beyond the palace walls, he served as President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, extending his influence and leadership across the wider Northern Region of Ghana.

His passing, following a brief illness, leaves behind a legacy few could match: a kingdom united, traditions revived, and a model of what true leadership through reconciliation looks like. In accordance with Dagbon custom, his eldest son has been enskinned as regent while the kingdom prepares for the next chapter under its ancient traditions.

To the people of Dagbon, and to all who admired his quiet strength and dedication to peace β€” this is a profound loss. May his memory continue to inspire unity long after his reign.

"WE CLIMB THE LADDER, THEN PULL IT UP BEHIND US." β€” WHY PROF. ENOCH ANTWI'S WORDS SHOULD MAKE EVERY SUCCESSFUL AFRICAN UNCOMFORTABLE.

In a recent interview on The Career Trail, Prof. Enoch Opoku Antwi said something that deserves more than a scroll-past: many Black people, once they rise, make it harder for fellow Black people to succeed.

It's an uncomfortable truth, but an important one. We celebrate representation, the first Black CEO, the first Black partner, the first Black founder to raise a Series A. But representation without reciprocity is just decoration. If the person who finally makes it through the door doesn't hold it open for the next one, what exactly have we achieved?

This isn't about guilt. It's about pattern recognition. Scarcity mindset gets baked into us early, the belief that there's only room for one "token" success per room, per boardroom, per industry. So instead of mentorship, we get gatekeeping. Instead of referrals, we get silence. Instead of "let me introduce you," we get "figure it out like I did."

But the most powerful thing about success isn't the title or the salary. It's the reach it gives you, the ability to open one more door than you walked through.

So here's a challenge, especially for those of you who've "made it": Who have you sponsored lately? Not mentored casually over coffee, actually sponsored. Recommended for the room you're in. Vouched for when they weren't in the room to defend themselves.

Rising alone isn't the win. Bringing others up is.
