ASSOCIATION OF HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PRACTITIONERS IN HEALTH, GHANA (AHRMPH-GH) – UPPER WEST DIVISIONAL CHAPTER INAUGURATION AND CPD COUNCIL MEETING.

The Upper West Divisional Chapter of the Association of Human Resource Management Practitioners in Health, Ghana (AHRMPH-GH), successfully held its Divisional Inauguration and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Council Meeting on 3rd June 2026.

Human Resource Managers play a pivotal role in the healthcare system by ensuring the effective management of the health workforce, promoting staff welfare and supporting quality healthcare delivery.

In his remarks, the Regional Human Resource Manager, Mr. Irenious Angso, who also serves as the National President of the Association and Patron of the Upper West Chapter, expressed his appreciation to participants for their attendance and commitment to the profession. He took the opportunity to officially induct the newly elected regional executives and advised them to discharge their responsibilities with diligence, patience and dedication in order to achieve the objectives of the Association.

The newly inducted Regional Chairman, Mr. Philip Nkrumah, welcomed participants and expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in the new executives. He assured members of their commitment to serving with transparency, fairness, accountability and firmness in advancing the interests of the Association.

Representing the Regional Director of Health Services,Dr. Alex Bapula, commended the Association for its invaluable contributions to the health sector. He conveyed the goodwill message of the RDHS and acknowledged the dedication and hard work of Human Resource Officers across the region. However, he expressed concern over instances where some officers resisted postings to certain health facilities and encouraged members to embrace postings in the interest of equitable healthcare delivery. He reiterated the critical role Human Resource Officers play within the health service and assured them of Management's appreciation and support.

Chairing the event was Dr. Gildas Mwanwaaru, a Gynaecologist at the Upper West Regional Hospital, who lauded the Association for organizing the programme at a timely moment. He commended Human Resource Officers for their unwavering commitment and the important role they continue to play in strengthening healthcare administration and service delivery.

The programme also witnessed strong solidarity from allied professional groups. The Regional Presidents of the Health Services Workers' Union (HSWU) and the Health Accounting Staff Association of Ghana (HASAG) were present and fully participated in the event.

The inauguration and CPD Council Meeting provided an important platform for professional development, networking and renewed commitment towards strengthening human resource management practices within the health sector in the Upper West Region.

Under the theme, “Free Primary Healthcare as a Catalyst for Universal Health Coverage: Perspectives from Researchers,” the forum will provide a platform to share evidence, innovations, and research findings that can contribute to strengthening Ghana’s health system and advancing universal health coverage.

Strengthening healthcare innovation through collaboration and commitment .

The Paediatric Society of Ghana (PSG) held its close-out activities for the Country Innovation Project (CIP) in the Upper West Region. The CIP Project is a pilot project spearheaded by the Ghana Health Service with funding support from Grand Challenges Canada which focuses on addressing issues on maternal and neonatal health for a period of 18 months with sustainability plans after the pilot period.

As the pilot initiative approached its conclusion, a close-out meeting involving five implementing districts — Jirapa, Nandom, Wa Municipal, Sissala East and Nadowli-Kaleo was held to ensure smooth transition and official handover of project assets and also assess outcomes so far.

The close-out process sought to consolidate the achievements of the project while addressing challenges identified during implementation.

In his welcome address, the Upper West Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Josephat A. Nyuzaghl, commended the project team for their dedication, commitment and hard work throughout the implementation period. He warmly welcomed participants from the implementing districts and encouraged staff to sustain the momentum and continue the good work to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project. He expressed gratitude to the Paediatric Society of Ghana for its continuous support and collaboration.

The President of the Paediatric Society of Ghana and Project Lead, Dr. Hilda Mantebea Boye, expressed appreciation to the Regional Health Directorate for its strong collaboration and commitment towards the successful implementation of the project. She urged participants to remain dedicated and continue giving their best to sustain the project’s impact.

Also, Dr. Haruna Mahama, Co-Project Lead thanked the districts and the Regional Health Directorate for their remarkable efforts and assured the region of PSG’s continued support.
He delivered a presentation on the project overview, highlighting key achievements, challenges and recommendations.
Among the major achievements highlighted were the installation of several digital blackboards (LDBs) at health facilities, the distribution of laptops to IT officers, training for IT personnel on the use of the LDBs, and the supply of tablets to peripheral health facilities.

District focal persons also shared their experiences during the implementation of the project, with participants giving very positive feedback on the project’s impact within their respective districts.

The Regional CIP Desk Lead and Deputy Director - Administration, Mr. Prosper M. Lana, thanked the team for their commitment and encouraged members to continue working diligently to sustain the gains achieved under the project. He gave assurance the Regional Health Directorate will continue to engage beneficiary districts to ensure sustainability of the project activities to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

Onchocerciasis Mass Drug Administration (MDA) Training Held in Upper West Region on the 27th of August, 2025.

The Upper West Regional Health Directorate has successfully organized a one-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop in preparation for the 2025 Round 1 Onchocerciasis Mass Drug Administration.

Delivering a message on behalf of the Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS), Dr. Felix Opare Adu urged participants to be attentive and take the training seriously. He stated the importance of adhering strictly to MDA protocols to ensure that sub-district health workers and community volunteers are effectively trained.

Madam Phoebe Bagmyeteme, District Director of Health Services (DDHS) for Nadowli-Kaleo was also present at the event. She shared her field experiences and encouraged participants to give their best during the upcoming MDA campaign.

In his remarks, Mr. Paddy Offei,a national-level representative, commended the region for its consistent dedication to MDA implementation. He encouraged participants to remain focused and committed despite the challenges they may face on the ground.

REGIONAL DIRECTOR COMMISSIONS EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME CENTRE AT WA MUNICIPAL HOSPITAL

The Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Josephat A. Nyuzaghl has today 22/08/2025 commissioned the Regional Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) Centre at the Wa Municipal Hospital to support the welfare of health workers in the region.

The initiative aims at providing a sound minded employee workforce for effective and efficient health service delivery in the region. The newly established centre will specifically cater for health personnel who may be suffering from psychosocial problems such as addiction to psychoactive substances, alcohol, gambling and other related challenges which could affect their overall wellbeing and service delivery to the public at large.

The short but colourful ceremony was attended by Senior Management members,Unit and program heads of the Regional Health Directorate, the Medical Superintendent of the Wa Municipal Hospital and his management team as well as other health staff.

In his address, Dr. Nyuzaghl stated the Regional Health Administration remains committed to supporting the EAP centre with the necessary logistics and resources to ensure its smooth operation. He urged staff to treat diligently and professionally, colleagues who may seek assistance, stressing that staff welfare remains a top priority under his leadership for a healthy population.

The Medical Superintendent of Wa Municipal Hospital expressed appreciation to the Regional Director and his team for bringing this intervention to their door stairs. He assured them of dedicated and professional service delivery by his team to meet the purpose of the unit as envisioned by the RDHS.
