The northernmost inhabited places on earth.

In the northern part of Greenland, the inugguit live in the harsh but still in one of the breathtaking places on earth.

They live off the land and sea by fishing halibut and hunting for narwhales and seals and walruses.

The distance from Qaanaaq to one of the northern most settlements on earth- Siorapaluk-is 70 kilometers (about 43 miles).

The landscape is also very special, with beautiful mountains and amazing views to the ice and the icecap,

The Qaanaaq sled is also very wide and more heavy due to the ice conditions in the area, so the sled dogs are also much stronger,

Have you heard of the northernmost inhabited places in the world in North Greenland?

World war two in North Greenland.

🔥World war two had the consequence, that when Denmark became occupied, the United States stepped in about supplying Greenland with goods,

🎉So Greenland became open to the rest of the world regarding ordering goods from another countries than Denmark,

📰In last 2 pictures, we show a newspaper clip from Avngnâmiok, written in the old writing system,

💯off course in the westgreenlandic Inuit language, about how grateful Knud Larsen from Qeqertaq was for the supply from the states, when Denmark was occupied from Germany in 1940

💥Have you heard about world war two in North Greenland?

Modernization in North Greenland.

🧾Greenland was colonized country from 18th century and was off limits to other countries except Denmark untill world war II in 1940, when Denmark was invaded by Germany.

💌And later in 1953 Greenland was declared as a county within the Kingdom of Denmark,

🔨During the 1950ies and 1960ies there was a modernization of Greenland (also North Greenland), where the houses made of wood, roads, harbours and factories were built and also the power plants that produced electricity,

🐟Many people also changed occupation from hunter to fisherman and the women started to work at the factories and the kindergardens,

💥Have you heard of the modernization of North Greenland?

Naming the arctic dogs.

The arctic dogs are a part of the cultural heritage in North Greenland, and naming them is also a special occasion,

Usually the owner's children also get to name them, but the arctic dogs also get named by their abilities and looks by the owner,

For example “Singarnaq” means the yellowish grey one, and “Milalik” means the spotted one, and they also are named by popular names and famous people’s names

And also off course how they behave can also impact the name of the arctic dog,

Ningioqut and ittoqut are the head of the dogs, ningioqut is the female lead dog, and ittoqut the male lead dog, but these are not used as names-you can surely see which ones, that are the leaders in a pack

Have you heard of the traditions of the dog’s names in North Greenland?

Soccer in Greenland.

😊In most cities and settlements, there are local soccer clubs, and in larger cities -there are several soccer clubs,

⚽There is a big loyalty to your club and also tournaments throughout the year in indoor soccer, now called futsal

🔥And also during summer, outdoor soccer national tournaments do occur in Greenland,

🎉The older soccer clubs started in 1930-ies, and there are many clubs after that also,

🏈Back in the older days you used to have a game that reminded of American soccer, or rugby where you used some sealskin filled with rock and carried it with you and ran for points,

👏Have you watched a soccer game in Greenland? It's usually with a big loud crowd,

Upernavik is a very nice island, with many opportunities of kayaking and has a beautiful scenery and peaceful town,

It used to be called Upernivik, it means the spring place,

The spring place is a piece of nature, where you used to come during spring to hunt for certain animals such as seals, ptarmigans, walrus and belugas

Nowadays Upernavik is populated with over a 1,000 people and fishing is the main income, and they have a fish factory,

On top of the town, it has the highest elevated airport, in the Kingdom of Denmark, 126 meters above sea level (414 feet),

It also has a museum, which has information about the town and the other buildings of the museum and about the history and art of Upernavik,

The island of Upernavik is surrounded by a maze-like islands, where you can go out for kayaking with a tour operator,

During winter, if the sea ice is formed, you can also go dogsledding, and sailing trips are also available,

The streets are narrow, but the people are very friendly, it’s far away from the noise from big cities in Greenland,

Kullorsuaq-a hunting and fishing village in North Greenland.

About 1 hour of helicopter flight from Upernavik- you can find Kullorsuaq, which is one of the biggest villages in Greenland, with about 450 inhabitants,

It is very remote and has tranquility with a great view, it is also close to the inland ice and is in a place with many mountains.

It's the last stop before the big bay of Qimusseriarsuaq bay on north, which is about 9 hours boat ride or 3 days of dogsledding.

The nearest village Nuussuaq is down south about 70 kilometers away,

Kullorsuaq is also inhabited with very nice and welcoming people, who are curious,

Hunting and fishing are the prime sources of livelihood, it also has a fishing factory,

It has a vibrant traditional life style, of making clothes and making hunting tools, but also are combined with modernized lifestyle,

Local people still go hunting using qajaq and boat and also during winter you use dogsled and snowmobile,

The main animals that you go for a hunt for are fish (halibut, cod), seals, walrus and whales and belugas,

Are you interested coming to Kullorsuaq in North Greenland?
