Research only creates impact when it is translated into action.

As part of the NRIF Capacity Strengthening Workshop, Dr. Lamin Darboe, Technical and Research Translation Specialist at NRIF, delivered an engaging session on “From Publication to Implementation: NRIF Research Translation Plans for Higher Impact.”

The interactive discussion introduced participants to the concept of research translation and explored how research findings can move beyond publications to inform policy, practice, innovation, and national development. As an emerging area within The Gambia’s research ecosystem, the session sparked meaningful conversations on bridging the gap between knowledge generation and real-world impact.

Communicating research is just as important as conducting it.

As part of the ongoing NRIF Capacity Strengthening Workshop, Mr. Sheikh Tijan Njie - Consti, Communication and Knowledge Management Specialist at , facilitated an interactive session on “Communicating for Development and Introducing Knowledge Management in The Gambia: A Case Study of the National Research and Innovation Fund.”

The session explored the role of strategic communication and knowledge management in enhancing the visibility, accessibility, and impact of research. Day Three of the NRIF Capacity Strengthening Workshop commenced with an insightful session by Dr. Kevin Ouko, Research Fellow at the African Centre for Technology Studies - ACTS, on Research and Innovation Frameworks and Research Synthesis.

The session explored how research funding can be better aligned with national priorities, while highlighting the importance of research synthesis in generating evidence, informing policy, shaping future funding priorities, and translating research findings into practical knowledge products for decision-making.

That question guided an engaging session by Mr. Modou Njie, Director of Resource Mobilisation, Investment and Partnerships at NRIF, who presented on “Sustainable Research and Innovation Funding in a Typical African Setting: The Case of the Endowment Fund.”

Day Two is underway at the NRIF Capacity Strengthening Workshop.

The day opened with an insightful session by Dr. Nicholas Odongo, Research Fellow at the African Centre for Technology Studies - ACTS, on “Grant Management: Frameworks, Lessons and Best Practices from the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI).”

Participants explored practical approaches to grant budgeting, work plan development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, reporting, digital grants management systems, and co-financing strategies for sustainability. The session also highlighted key lessons and best practices for strengthening effective and accountable research grant management.

As the workshop progresses, participants continue to gain practical knowledge to strengthen research funding systems and maximise the impact of research and innovation in The Gambia.

Turning funding opportunities into funded ideas.

As part of the ongoing NRIF Capacity Strengthening Workshop, Mr. Saidina Babucarr Ceesay, Director of Programmes at NRIF, led an interactive session on the 2026 NRIF Windows.

The session walked participants through the available funding , requirements, and practical on preparing competitive applications. It also provided an open platform for participants to ask questions and discuss best practices for accessing NRIF funding to advance research and innovation.

What makes a research grant call truly competitive?

That was the focus of an engaging session led by Dr. Eunice Monyenye Omwoyo, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the African Centre for Technology Studies - ACTS, during the ongoing NRIF Capacity Strengthening Workshop.

The session explored the key elements of research management, including designing high-quality calls, setting clear eligibility criteria, developing strategic proposals, managing proposal selection and review processes, and promoting transparency through best practices in peer review and conflict of interest management.

As the workshop continues, participants are gaining practical knowledge and tools to strengthen research funding systems and promote excellence in research and innovation.

The NRIF Capacity Strengthening Workshop is officially underway!

Organised by the National Research & Innovation Fund-NRIF The Gambia in partnership with the African Centre for Technology Studies - ACTS and with funding from the Science Granting Councils Initiative ( ), the workshop is being held under the theme: “Strengthening Research and Innovation Ecosystems through Effective Grant Management and Strategic Partnerships.” The event has brought together stakeholders from across The Gambia’s and ecosystem, including academia, government institutions, research organisations, innovation hubs, civil society, and the private sector.

The opening ceremony featured remarks from Professor Momodou Sallah, Executive Director of NRIF; Dr. Ebrima Sall, Chairperson of the NRIF Governing Board; Dr. Nicholas Odongo, representing ACTS and SGCI; and Mr. Edward Mendy, Director of Science and Technology at Ministry of Higher Education,Research Science and Technology, representing the Honourable Minister.

Throughout the opening session, speakers underscored the importance of stronger , strategic , and effective management in mobilising resources and strengthening research and innovation for national development.

Over the next three days, participants will engage in practical learning, knowledge exchange, and collaborative discussions aimed at building a stronger and more resilient research and innovation ecosystem for The Gambia.
