Today Tuesday 22nd October 2024 ANFEU staff together with other implementing partners, relevant stakeholders and the African Development Bank (AfDB) mission participated in the launching of the Vulnerable Youth and Women Support Project (VYWoSP) at SDKJ - ICC . The National Social Protection Secretariat (NSPS) is the custodian of the project and serves as the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), responsible for the overall coordination of the project in partnership with other implementing partners.

Other implementing partners (IPs) include ANFEU-MoBSE, NaNA, DCD, NEDi, GBOS, and MoTWI.

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare delivered the launching statement on behalf of the Vice President.

"It was estimated that in the year 2000 there were 862 million illiterates in the world. This represented a reduction of 2% over the decade and a further reduction (around 7%) is expected by 2015" (EFA global monitoring report 2003/4). From the same source the Gambia is noted as one of the none countries in sub- saharan Africa whose Adult literacy rates were below 40%, and this has far reaching implications for the Government of the Gambia.

Adult Literacy activities in The Gambia date far back to the Rural Development Project (RDP) that established a pilot within the Rural National Literacy Advisory Committee (NLAC). As the pilot phase progressed the need for a more structured programme became evident.
Consequently, the Ministry of Education now the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) was required to establish a non-formal education services sub sector used to be headed by a Directorate now headed by a Principal Education Officer (PEO) under the Directorate of Inservice Training and Life-long Learning (DITaLL). In 1981, this sub sector was established to supervise and coordinate literacy activities. However, given the situation that there was limited know-how and limited resources, the sub sector had to become an implementing agency to justify its existence.
Presently, the office is located at Regional Education Directorate one complex Kanifing, under the Directorate of Inservice Training and Life-long Learning (DITaLL).
