CHANGE OF NAME OF AN INSTITUTION

In accordance with Section 47 subsection 1, 2, 3 & 4 of the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA) Act 2021 on change of name of an institution, the general public is hereby informed that SDA SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCE has formally applied to the Authority for approval to change its name to SDA COLLEGE.

Pursuant to the applicable provisions, this notice serves as official publication of the application.

Any person who wishes to object to the proposed change of name may do so in writing to the Authority within thirty (30) days from the date of publication of this notice.

NAQAA hosted a national workshop bringing together higher education leaders, educators, researchers and decision-makers from across the Country to explore AI's role in higher education.

The workshop featured three main presenters:
🔹 Sambujang Marreh — AI Policy Framework
🔹 Alpha MK Lowe — Ethical and Responsible Use of AI
🔹 Amran Gaye — Building AI Literacy and Future-Ready Skills for Educators, Researchers and Students

Amran Gaye's session went beyond prompt-writing to help participants understand AI's capabilities and limits, evaluate outputs for accuracy and bias, and apply a practical framework for responsible AI use — leaving institutions with a concrete 90-day action plan.

A key step in shaping how Gambian higher education harnesses AI responsibly.

The National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA) and Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote accountability, strengthen social security compliance, and safeguard fair retirement benefits for employees across Tertiary and Higher Education Institutions.

Speaking at the signing, NAQAA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Tarro described the MoU as the beginning of a strengthened partnership between the two institutions — one that will yield lasting benefits for employees in the tertiary and higher education sector.

Both leaders Dr. Tarro and SSHFC Managing Director Mr. Malang reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the welfare of employees within the sector.

All Tuition Fees for Tertiary and Higher Education Institutions Must Be Quoted in Gambian Dalasi

The National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA) wish to inform all tertiary and higher education institutions, students, parents, guardians, sponsors, and the general public that the Gambian Dalasi (GMD) is the legal tender of the Republic of The Gambia.

Accordingly, all tuition fees and other institutional charges levied by tertiary and higher education institutions operating in The Gambia must be quoted, advertised, invoiced, and collected in Gambian Dalasi (GMD).

This directive is issued in furtherance of the Authority's mandate to promote quality assurance, transparency, accountability, and fairness in the administration of tertiary and higher education in
The Gambia.

In recent times, the Authority has observed that some institutions have been quoting tuition fees and other charges in foreign currencies. This practice exposes students and their families to
fluctuations in exchange rates, creates uncertainty in educational costs, and undermines transparency in the pricing of educational services.

The use of the Gambian Dalasi as the sole currency for quoting tuition fees will:

* Promote transparency and consistency in the determination of educational costs;

* Protect students and sponsors from exchange rate volatility;

* Facilitate effective financial planning by students and their families;

* Strengthen compliance with the financial and monetary laws of The Gambia; and

* Enhance public confidence in the governance and administration of tertiary education.

Scope of the Directive

With immediate effect, all registered and accredited tertiary and higher education institutions in The Gambia shall ensure that:

1. All tuition fees shall be quoted exclusively in Gambian Dalasi (GMD) in all admission letters issued by tertiary and higher education institutions.

2. All admission brochures, prospectuses, websites, advertisements, application forms, invoices, receipts, and other official publications reflect fees in Gambian Dalasi.

3. Administrative fees, registration fees, examination fees, graduation fees, laboratory fees, accommodation charges, and all other institutional charges are similarly quoted in Gambian Dalasi.

4. Any institution that wishes to review or adjust its fees shall do so in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and communicate such changes transparently to the Authority and the public.

Institutional Compliance

All institutions are required to review their existing fee schedules and ensure full compliance with this directive. Institutions that currently quote fees in foreign currencies are expected to amend
their publications and financial documentation accordingly within a reasonable period prescribed by the Authority.

NAQAA will monitor compliance through its routine quality assurance and regulatory activities. Institutions found to be in breach of this directive may be subject to appropriate regulatory
measures in accordance with the NAQAA Act, 2021, and other applicable laws and regulations.

Guidance for Students and the Public

Students, parents, guardians, sponsors, and members of the public are encouraged to report any institution that continues to advertise or demand tuition fees in currencies other than the Gambian
Dalasi.

The Authority remains committed to safeguarding the interests of students while ensuring that tertiary and higher education institutions operate in a transparent, accountable, and legally
compliant manner.

NAQAA calls upon all institutions and stakeholders to cooperate fully in implementing this directive in the interest of protecting students, promoting sound financial practices, and strengthening the integrity of The Gambia's tertiary and higher education sector.

Advancing TVET in the Microfinance Sector

Experts in industrial attachment and assessment has convened today for a two day session to develop a comprehensive Industrial Attachment Framework for the microfinance sector, building on the successful National TVET Curriculum for Financial Cooperatives and Microfinance Institutions.

The framework will establish clear principles, governance arrangements, roles, and implementation processes, supported by robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms — ensuring consistent, high-quality, industry-aligned work placements for trainees.

This Framework has been developed through a strategic collaboration with NACCUG , with financial support from DSIK.

This marks a significant milestone in strengthening practical skills training within The Gambia's financial sector.

Today, we proudly welcomed a delegation from the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, Nigeria, who paid us a courtesy visit to learn more about our Quality Assurance systems within the post-secondary education sector.

The visit provided a valuable platform for fruitful deliberations and the exchange of ideas on best practices in quality assurance. Our Director of Quality Assurance, Mr. Lamin B. Manneh, took the delegation through a comprehensive overview of the processes and procedures underpinning our tertiary and higher education quality assurance systems, highlighting how these frameworks help safeguard standards and drive continuous improvement across the sector.

This visit stands as a clear testament to NAQAA's growing recognition, both regionally and internationally, as a trusted authority committed to upholding and advancing quality education in The Gambia.

The National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA) has commenced its Quality Audit Exercise as part of its mandate in promoting excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement in education and training across The Gambia.

The first phase of the audit took the team to the Agricultural Technology and Innovation Centre (ATIC) in the North Bank Region (NBR), where auditors engaged with staff, reviewed institutional processes, and assessed compliance with established quality assurance standards.

This exercise is part of NAQAA’s broader efforts to strengthen quality education and skills development by ensuring that institutions operate in line with national requirements and internationally recognised best practices.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the management and staff of ATIC for their cooperation and commitment to quality enhancement throughout the process.

Delivering a statement at the occasion, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA), Dr. Momodou Lamin Tarro, described the workshop as a critical milestone in strengthening The Gambia’s higher education legal and regulatory framework.

Dr. Tarro noted that the 2016 Act has played a central role in guiding governance, accreditation, regulation, and quality assurance in the tertiary education sector. However, he emphasized that evolving global and national developments—including new modes of learning, technological advancement, and emerging institutional needs—have necessitated its review.

He explained that the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) mandated NAQAA to lead the review process to identify gaps within the existing legislation and ensure alignment with national development priorities as well as international best practices in higher education governance and quality assurance.

The review process, he further highlighted, focused on strengthening institutional governance, enhancing regulatory effectiveness, clarifying mandates and responsibilities, promoting accountability and transparency, supporting innovation and flexible programme delivery, and reinforcing quality assurance mechanisms.

He also highlighted that the validation workshop provides stakeholders with a final opportunity to examine the proposed amendments and contribute to consensus-building on a strengthened legislative framework for the sector.

He expressed appreciation to MoHERST, higher education institutions, and all stakeholders for their active engagement and contributions throughout the review process, noting that their inputs have been instrumental in shaping the revised Act.

Participants were urged to engage constructively in the validation process to ensure that the final document reflects collective aspirations and supports the development of a responsive, inclusive, and internationally competitive higher education system in The Gambia.

The validation exercise continues, with stakeholders expected to consolidate feedback to inform the finalization of the reviewed Act.
