Development Initiatives of Brikama Area Council Under the Leadership of Hon. Chairman Yanks Darboe
Under the able leadership of Hon. Chairman Yanks Darboe, the Brikama Area Council has implemented a number of development initiatives aimed at improving the lives and livelihoods of people across the West Coast Region. Key achievements include:
Fiscal Discipline and Responsible Financial Management
The Council has prioritised fiscal discipline by maximising revenue mobilisation while ensuring that expenditures are both realistic and aligned with the Council's development priorities.
Youth Employment
Over 200 young people have been employed, creating much-needed employment opportunities and contributing to the economic empowerment of young people in the region.
Education and Scholarships
More than 800 young people have benefited from full scholarship packages, providing them with opportunities to pursue their education and improve their future prospects.
Religious Support
The Council provides annual food support to Majalis across the region during Ramadan and Mawlid. Financial assistance is also extended to the Christian community as part of the Council's commitment to supporting religious and social cohesion.
Medical Assistance
Support has been provided to vulnerable individuals and families requiring medical treatment, including assistance for both local and overseas medical treatment.
Youth Empowerment and Sports Development
The Council provides annual budgetary support to the Regional Youth and Sports Committee, helping to promote youth development, sports, and community engagement.
Clean and Safe Drinking Water
More than 90 boreholes have been provided across the region, helping communities gain improved access to clean and safe drinking water.
Socio-Economic Development of Women
Numerous horticultural gardens and market sheds have been constructed or rehabilitated, creating opportunities for women to engage in income-generating activities and strengthen their livelihoods.
Road Infrastructure
Several important road projects have been undertaken, including the Nana Junction-to-BAC Main Gate road, which was concreted through Tesito, the access road to the Brikama Fish Market, as well as the annual rehabilitation of feeder roads in various communities.
Drainage and Flood Mitigation
The Council has constructed more than 100 metres of drainage as well as a culvert in Brikama Jambarr Sanneh, helping to improve drainage and reduce the impact of flooding in the community.
Ward Development Fund
The Council has consistently provided funds to wards to support community-driven development projects, allowing communities to identify and implement projects based on their own priorities.
Waste Management
The Council has strengthened waste management through the provision of a brand-new fleet of machinery and equipment for waste collection and disposal, contributing to cleaner and healthier communities.
These initiatives demonstrate the Brikama Area Council's commitment to responsible governance, infrastructure development, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, women's economic advancement, environmental sanitation, and community-led development across the West Coast Region.
