A constitutionally mandated independent non-partisan Council established to design, co-ordinate and implement Civic Education programmes in The Gambia

The NCCE was created as an independent non-partisan Council under the Constitution, to design and co-ordinate Civic Education programmes and to serve as the advocacy component to the National Governance Programme. It envisioned a politically enlighten citizenry based on the principle of democracy and good governance as enshrined in the Constitution and other international legal instruments.

NCCE Concludes Two-Day Capacity Building Training on Lobbying and Advocacy in Wassu

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (TANGO) under the EU–UNDP GREAT Project, has successfully concluded a two-day Capacity Building Training on Lobbying and Advocacy Skills in Wassu, Central River Region North.

Held under the theme “Empowering Voices: Strategic Advocacy for Local Impact,” the training brought together community organisations, civil society actors, media practitioners, representatives of marginalised groups, and decentralisation structures. The goal was to strengthen participants’ capacity to engage in strategic, impactful, and sustainable lobbying and advocacy, and to equip them with practical tools to influence policy decisions, mobilise stakeholders, and effectively articulate community needs.

Over the two days, participants engaged in discussions and practical exercises on key areas of lobbying and advocacy, including:

🔹 Strategic Advocacy for Local Impact
🔹 Identifying Community Issues and Advocacy Priorities
🔹 Stakeholder Mapping and Engagement
🔹 Developing Effective Advocacy Messages
🔹 Using Evidence to Influence Decision-Making
🔹 Building Strategic Alliances and Partnerships
🔹 Mobilising Stakeholders for Community Action
🔹 Promoting Inclusion and Defending the Right to Participation
🔹 Developing Practical and Sustainable Advocacy Strategies

A major highlight of the training was the group work, which gave participants an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained to real community issues. Working in groups, participants identified key challenges affecting their communities, developed advocacy objectives, mapped relevant stakeholders and potential allies, and explored practical approaches for engaging decision-makers.

The group exercises encouraged participants to learn from one another, share experiences, and develop solutions grounded in their local realities. This practical approach reinforced the importance of evidence, effective communication, collaboration, and strategic action in achieving meaningful advocacy outcomes.

NCCE and TANGO Strengthen Capacity in Lobbying and Advocacy

Building on the success of a similar training held last year, the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (TANGO) under the EU/UNDP GREAT Project, has launched another two-day Capacity Building Training on Lobbying and Advocacy in Wassu, Central River Region North.

Held under the theme “Empowering Voices: Strategic Advocacy for Local Impact,” the training continues this year due to its relevance and the growing demand for stronger civic engagement at the local level. It brings together representatives from civil society and community-based organisations, media practitioners, marginalised groups, and decentralisation structures.

The training aims to equip participants with practical tools and knowledge to:
✅ Effectively articulate community concerns
✅ Engage relevant stakeholders
Build strategic alliances
✅ Use credible evidence
✅ Influence policy and decision-making processes

In his opening remarks, Mr. Ansumana Ceesay, Programme Manager at NCCE, underscored the importance of advocacy and lobbying. “Effective advocacy is not simply about making demands or raising our voices. It is about understanding the issue, identifying the right decision-makers, developing clear messages, and building strategic alliances,” he said. “Evidence gives advocacy credibility. Communication gives advocacy a voice. Alliances give advocacy strength. And strategic action turns advocacy into change.”

Also speaking at the event,is Mr Ebrima Kinteh the NHRC Principal Regional Administrative Officer for CRR and URR commended NCCE and TANGO for sustaining the training.
The NHRC welcomes this initiative as it strengthens the capacity of communities to claim their rights and hold duty-bearers accountable. Human rights must remain at the heart of all advocacy efforts., he added .

Honourable Sori Darboe, Councillor for Banni Ward representing Kuntaur Area Council and its people, also expressed gratitude to NCCE for continuing the activity. “This training is very important to taxpayers. It gives them the skills and knowledge to hold their leaders accountable and to lobby and advocate on issues for the betterment of their lives and communities,” he said.

Participants were encouraged to place affected communities at the centre of advocacy by ensuring that their voices and experiences directly inform the solutions and decisions that impact their lives.

As part of its Community Sensitization Campaign ahead of the 5th December 2026 Presidential Election, the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU–UNDP GREAT Initiative, conducted a series of radio programmes across the Upper River Region (URR) and Central River Region (CRR).

The radio engagements provided an important platform to extend civic and electoral education beyond community meetings, reaching a wider audience with key messages on civic rights and responsibilities, credible elections, political tolerance, electoral integrity, and peaceful participation.

Discussions also highlighted the role of citizens in promoting peace and the importance of verifying information before sharing, particularly during the electoral period. Participants were encouraged to make informed decisions, respect differing political views, and contribute positively to the democratic process.

Through both radio and face-to-face community engagements, the NCCE continues to bring civic and electoral education closer to citizens, ensuring that communities are informed, engaged, and prepared to participate peacefully and responsibly in the upcoming elections.

NCCE Concludes Community Sensitization Campaign Ahead of the 2026 Presidential Election

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU–UNDP GREAT Initiative, has successfully concluded its Community Sensitization Campaign under the theme: “Informed Citizens: The Pillar of Credible Elections and Resilient Democracy.”

The campaign engaged communities across the Central River Region (CRR) and Upper River Region (URR), bringing together men, women, youth, and persons with disabilities to discuss key issues surrounding the upcoming 5th December 2026 Presidential Election.

Throughout the engagements, communities were sensitized on:
🔹 The importance of credible elections
🔹 Electoral codes of conduct
🔹 Civic rights and responsibilities
🔹 Political tolerance and its role in sustaining peace
🔹 The importance of informed and peaceful participation

The engagements concluded with a strong emphasis on the principles of democracy as enshrined in the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia, particularly the principle that sovereignty resides in the people and that elections provide citizens with an important avenue to exercise that power.

NCCE calls on all eligible voters to get informed, participate actively, uphold peace and tolerance, and contribute to a credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.

NCCE Continues Community Sensitization Campaign in URR & CRR North

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative, continues its community sensitization campaign ahead of the December 5 Presidential Election in the Upper River Region (URR) and Central River Region North (CRR North).

The sessions, held in Sabi and Kanyubeh in URR, and Kerr Hali and Koffa in CRR North, focused on Credible Elections and National Unity.

Speaking during the session in Kerr Hali, Demba Jallow emphasized the important role of young people and women in politics and decision-making.

“Young people and women make up a significant portion of our population, and they should actively participate in politics and decision-making processes. However, let us avoid conflict, hate speech, and divisive comments because, regardless of our political differences, we all belong to The Gambia.”

The NCCE continues to encourage citizens to promote peaceful participation, respect differing views, and work together to strengthen democracy and national unity.

NCCE Continues Community Sensitization Campaign in URR and CRR North

As the nationwide community sensitization campaign draws to a close, the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative, continues to engage communities on the importance of political participation, peaceful participation, national unity, and tolerance.

The NCCE team sensitized communities in Kuwonkuba and Misera in URR North, as well as Charmen Nianija and Gueden in CRR North.

During the engagement in Charmen Nianija, Alasan Davies Cham urged community members to keep politics from creating divisions within families, emphasizing “Politics and family are not the same. Do not pressure your family members to support the political party you support. If you allow politics to come between you and your family, you may live to regret it.”

Meanwhile, Mamadou Camara of Kuwonkuba, URR North, highlighted the importance of exercising one’s civic responsibility through voting saying that “No one should collect a voter’s card only to abstain from voting without a valid reason. That card represents state resources funded by taxpayers. Voting is the means by which citizens express their voice, entrusting leaders with the responsibility to govern in their best interest.”

NCCE Continues Community Sensitization Campaign in URR & CRR North

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative, continues its community sensitization campaign ahead of the December 5 Presidential Election, in the URR and CRR North.

Speaking during the sensitization activities, Nfally Jallow, Alkalo Representative of Sare Ngai, urged community members to refrain from labeling or reporting fellow citizens as supporters of opposition parties during the campaign period. He cautioned that such practices can create unnecessary divisions, undermine trust, and disrupt peaceful coexistence within communities.

In Kucha, Alagie Ndow, Alkalo, reminded community members that every eligible candidate has the right to visit villages and campaign peacefully. He encouraged residents to welcome all candidates and allow them to engage with communities without intimidation or disruption.
“No one knows who the next President would be, so let us ensure peaceful political participation.” He further called on everyone to reject violence and embrace tolerance, respect, and peaceful participation throughout the electoral process.

As the country prepares for the Presidential Election, citizens are encouraged to know their rights, respect the rights of others, verify information, and participate peacefully and responsibly.

NCCE Reaches Community Sensitization Campaign in URR & CRR North

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative, has reached Upper River Region (URR) and Central River Region (CRR) North for its community sensitization campaign ahead of the December 5th Presidential Election.

This campaign, aimed to raise awareness on citizens’ political rights and responsibilities under the 2025 Electoral Act, counter misinformation, foster tolerance in a competitive political environment, strengthen national unity through civic dialogue and community engagement, and promote peaceful, inclusive, and credible participation in the 2026 presidential election and beyond.

The sessions, held in Baja K***a and Limbambulu Bambo in URR, and Timpa and Lamin Koto in CRR, focused on the significance of peaceful participation before, during, and after elections.

Ousman Jawo in his comment shared that “Let us avoid creating problems during political campaigns simply to distract or provoke others. Politics should not create divisions among us. We should be able to support our individual political parties without fighting. The Gambia is a multiparty state, and we cannot all support the same party. Many of these conflicts are caused by ignorance, which we must work together to overcome.”

NCCE Concludes Community Sensitization Campaign in URR & CRR South

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative, has concluded a community sensitization campaign across the Upper River Region (URR) and Central River Region (CRR) South.

The sessions, held in Sanunding and K***am Mafatty in URR, and Bamba Kolong and Kunukou in CRR, focused on the importance of sharing verified information and combating misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech before, during, and after elections.

At the Sanunding session, Mamadou Jawo, a Youth Leader, encouraged young people to actively participate in the electoral process, not only as voters but also by seeking political office. He emphasized that young people are the cream of society and have an important role to play in shaping the country’s future.

Meanwhile, Aminata Gaye, a participant from Bamba Kolong, highlighted the dangers of misinformation and urged community members to be more mindful of the information they consume and share online. “Let us be mindful of the information we consume and share on the internet, particularly on platforms such as TikTok. We are increasingly exposed to misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, all of which can undermine peaceful elections and social cohesion. I urge everyone to take responsibility by verifying information before sharing it and by standing against misinformation and hate speech.”

Through these engagements, the NCCE continues to promote informed participation, responsible citizenship, peaceful elections, and social cohesion within communities.

NCCE Continues Community Sensitization Campaign in URR & CRR

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative, continues its community sensitization campaign across the Upper River Region (URR) and Central River Region (CRR).

Today’s sessions, held simultaneously in Kulari and Dingiri in URR, and Kerr Malima and Jareng in CRR, focused on the importance of citizens’ participation in elections and how active participation strengthens democracy and good governance.

Community members actively engaged in discussions, shared their perspectives, and gained a better understanding of why every vote matters.

The Alkalo of Jareng, Alasan Ceesay, alike on the timeliness of the engagement, noting that it comes as the country approaches the elections. He emphasized that such sensitization is important in helping citizens understand the value of participating in elections and adhering to the electoral code of conduct, thereby contributing to a healthy, peaceful, and credible 2026 Presidential Election.

Kandeh Waggeh of Dingiri, highlighted that “Tribal discrimination is rising in political engagements, but The Gambia has a long history of peaceful coexistence and intermarriage across ethnic lines.” He urged Gambians to reject tribalism, protect national unity, and actively participate in elections, including the upcoming LGA and NAM polls.
