【🎓JICA Scholars – Building Bridges between Japan and PNG ✨】
On 4 September, Mr. Shinichi Tamamitsu, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan, attended the 2026 JICA Scholars Pre-departure Briefing and Annual General Meeting of the JICA PNG Alumni Association. Mr. Tamamitsu congratulated the new JICA scholars and encouraged them to make the most of their studies and experiences in Japan, while building friendships and connections between our two countries. 📚🤝

We wish all the scholars a rewarding journey ahead and every success in Japan! 🌏✨

【📸 A CLOSER LOOK AT “LET’S DISCOVER JAPAN!” AT UPNG 】
Following yesterday’s “Let’s Discover Japan!” cultural event at UPNG, here are some more snapshots from the day!
Students had the opportunity to experience Japan in different ways — trying origami, watching an ikebana demonstration up close, and tasting Japanese food. 🌸🍱

The origami corner drew a particularly enthusiastic crowd, with participants creating an impressive variety of works, while Japanese food also attracted long queues. It was a chance to experience Japanese culture by seeing, creating and tasting it firsthand.

Thank you again to everyone who participated and supported the event!

昨日9月3日にUPNGで開催した日本文化イベント「Let’s Discover Japan!」。今回は、当日の様子を写真とともにご紹介します！

会場では、学生の皆さんが折り紙に挑戦したり、生け花の実演を間近で見たり、日本食を味わったりと、様々な日本文化を楽しんでいただきました🌸🍱

特に折り紙コーナーには多くの学生が集まり、個性豊かな作品が次々と完成！日本食の提供にも長い列ができ、実際に「見て、作って、味わう」日本文化交流の機会となりました。

ご参加・ご協力いただいた皆様、ありがとうございました！

【🌸 EXPERIENCE JAPAN AT UPNG! — LET’S DISCOVER JAPAN! ✨】
Today, 3 September, we held “Let’s Discover Japan!”, a Japanese cultural event at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG)!
Participants experienced Japanese culture through ikebana, origami, Japanese food, a Makizushi demonstration and more — and the event was filled with smiles! 🌸🍣

Our sincere appreciation to UPNG, Ela Motors, and everyone who helped make the event possible.

📚 Connecting History to the Future 🤝

On 2 September, the Embassy welcomed Mr. Stalen Jethro, a MEXT scholar currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Tsukuba, together with Prof. Toshiya Matsui and Prof. Jun Suzuki and other academics from various fields who are visiting Papua New Guinea to conduct research on the preservation of war heritage in Rabaul.

We had a valuable exchange of views on preserving the memories and heritage of the past and passing them on to future generations🕊️✨

📚 歴史を未来へつなぐ 🤝
9月2日、国費留学生として筑波大学大学院で世界遺産学の修士課程を修了し、現在博士課程で研究を続けるJethroさんが、松井筑波大学教授、鈴木東京大学教授をはじめ、ラバウルの戦跡保存に関する調査のためPNGを訪問中の各分野の先生方とともに、大使館を訪問しました🎓

過去の記憶や歴史遺産をいかに保存し、次の世代へと紡いでいくかについて、非常に貴重な意見交換の機会となりました🕊️

🇯🇵🤝🇵🇬　JICA Volunteers Ready for Their New Assignments!

On 31 August, five Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCVs) visited the Embassy of Japan before beginning their assignments in Papua New Guinea.

They will work in various fields, including education, Japanese language, community development and computer technology, contributing their skills and experience to local communities across PNG 📚💻🌏

We wish them every success in their new assignments and hope they will build many lasting friendships with the people of Papua New Guinea! ✨

【Handover Ceremony for the FY2023 Grant Aid “Economic and Social Development Programme” (Provision of 60 Police Vehicles) (25 August)】
On August 25, 2026, Ambassador Mochizuki attended the handover ceremony at the National Centre of Excellence in Port Moresby for 60 police vehicles, worth of about 500 million yen, provided under the Grant Aid “Economic and Social Development Programme🚓

At the handover ceremony, he stated, “This assistance addresses one of the most pressing needs in the security sector, and we recognize that maintaining peace, security, and public order is fundamental to effective policing. Japan hopes that these vehicles will serve as practical tools to support police officers in their daily duties and, ultimately, contribute to creating safer communities nationwide.

【令和５年度無償資金協力「経済社会開発計画」（警察車両60台供与）の引渡式（８月25日）】
2026年8月25日、National Centre of Excellenceで、無償資金協力「経済社会開発計画」で供与した警察車両60台（５億円相当）の引渡式が実施され、望月大使が出席しました🚓

望月大使は、「この支援は、治安分野における最も喫緊のニーズの一つに応えるものであり、平和・安全・公共の秩序を維持することが、効果的な警察活動における重要な基本的価値観であることを私たちは認識しています。日本は、これらの車両が警察官の日々の職務を支える実践的な道具となり、最終的には全国各地でより安全なコミュニティの実現に資することを期待しています。」と述べました。

💞【Connecting Hearts / MEXT – Vol. 13: Ms. Delailah KARIS】
Ms. Delailah Karis is currently pursuing her graduate studies in Policy Science at Ritsumeikan University📚✨ Through classes, research, and exploring Japan, she has grown both academically and personally🌏

She has also enjoyed meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures, discovering new places, and experiencing Japan’s orderly way of life. One of her simple daily highlights is grabbing a 7-Eleven iced latte ☕ on the way to campus — something that has now become part of her study routine!

Ms. Karis says studying in Japan has helped her grow in ways she did not expect, and she is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the MEXT community.

We wish her continued success and hope her experience will further strengthen the friendship between Japan and Papua New Guinea🤝 　
　
💞【Connecting Hearts／国費留学生　第１3弾デライラ・カリスさん】
カリスさんは現在、立命館大学大学院政策科学研究科・政策科学専攻で学んでいます📚✨ 授業や研究、日本各地での経験を通じ、学問だけでなく人としても成長を感じているそうです🌏

また、さまざまな背景を持つ人々との出会いや、日本の秩序立った生活にも親しんできました。日々のちょっとした楽しみは、大学へ向かう途中でセブン‐イレブンのアイスラテ☕を買うこと。今ではすっかり勉強前のルーティンになっているそうです！

日本への留学を通じ、想像していなかった面でも自分自身の成長を感じており、MEXT留学生として学ぶ機会に感謝していると語ってくれました。今後のさらなる活躍と、日本とパプアニューギニアの友好の架け橋となることを願っています🤝

“Bikpela tru” means “Very big/とても大きい”.
トクピシン語で「とても大きい」は、”Bikpela tru(ビクペラトゥル)”と言います！

“Haus em i bikpela tru” means “The house is very big/その家はとても大きい”.

今月は物のサイズをトクピシン語で紹介しました。来月もお楽しみに！

８月２５日、当館梅野書記官は、ニューギニア航空の日本直行便を含むフライト運行に関する各種情報について意見交換を実施しました。また、今後も双方で連携していくことを確認しました。
