SME Corporation is mandated by the SMEC Act 2014 to promote and develop MSMEs in PNG.

The Small and Medium Enterprises Corporation (SMEC) is a Commercial Statutory Authority (CSA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. SMEC is mandated by Parliament through the SME Corporation Act 2014 to; (a) plan and implement and, (b) promote and facilitate the growth and development of the MSME sector in PNG through implementation of the National SME Policy 2016 and SME Master Plan 2016-2030.

SME CORPORATION AND PNG CHRISTIAN PROFRESSIONALS NETWORK INC. COLLABORATE FOR MSME DEVELOPMENT IN THE COUNTRY

Monday August 24th, 2026:

SME Corporation, as being the lead government agency in MSME Development in the country has now partnered with the PNG Christian Professionals Network Inc. through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on Monday 24th, August 2026.

The MoU will see SME Corporation deliver its key programs and projects through the PNG Christian Professionals Network.

SME Corporation Managing Director, Mr. Petrus Ralda when signing the MoU, stressed on the importance of working in partnership in delivering government services to the people at the village level. “Where government services cannot reach the people, churches, and non – government organizations like the PNG Christian Professionals Network Inc. are there to help deliver those much need services to the people. SME Corporation is happy to work with the PNG Christians Professionals Network Inc. to deliver MSME Development to the people in the rural communities through its church network."

The Chief Executive Officer of PNG Christian Professional Network Inc. (PNGCPN) Mr. Samuel Ray who signed on behalf of PNGCPN stated that they have a strong network that will be used to implement programs and projects under the MoU.

Meantime, the MoU signing was witnessed by senior staff of both organizations.

Monday August 17th, 2026:

The Women and Enterprises Development Centre (WEDC) has officially started enrolment for the second batch for the National Certificate I (NC I) under Garment and Textile Training Program (GTTP) today.

The enrolment will be for a week.

So far 15 female participants have enrolled for NC I which 5 of them are detainees from the Bomana Correctional Institution.

National Certificate I (NC I) and National Certificate II programs will run for 16 weeks.

Meantime, 11 participants have been enrolled for National Certificate II (NC II) under the Garment and Textile Training Program (GTTP).

SME CORPORATION RE-STRATEGIZED BOTTOM-UP APPROACH

As part of its re-strategized bottom -up approach, SME Corporation has graduated 118 participants from its Start Your Business – Micro Enterprise (SYB-ME) and Improve Your Business (IYB) trainings on Friday August 14th, 2026.

The participants were mostly ward councillors, representatives and presidents from the New Anglimp District of Jiwaka Province.

The Managing Director of SME Corporation Mr. Petrus Ralda who officiated at the graduation, challenged the community leaders be agents of change in their respective communities.
“Yupla save toktok long senis, tasol senis em yupla yet imas kamapim. Nau yupla kisim displa SYB na IYB training, em yupla imas kamap agents of change lo wanwan komuniti blong yupla.”
Ward councillors expressed gratitude to SME Corporation in delivering one of its key programs to them.

Meantime, a total of 118 participants attended the two ILO programs, 89 participants under SYB-ME and 29 participants under IYB.
The SYB-ME participants were mainly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) operating in the informal sector, as well as aspiring entrepreneurs.

The IYB training was targeted at MSMEs who have already acquired the SYB-ME training and are already operating in the formal sector and those yet to formalize their businesses.

Meet Mathew Akip 47 years old from Peie village in Wurup ward 2 in the Anglimp Local Level Government of South Waghi District of Jiwaka Province.

He left school while doing his grade two at Warup Primary School.

Despite his educational background Mathew decided to do venture into agricultural activities after he got married in the late 1990s.

He bought a 15-seater bus from the money earned from selling fresh vegetables at the Hagen Market.

However, he faced challenges in managing his transport business.
In 2022, SME Corporation facilitated two weeks Start Your Business Entrepreneurship training at Warup Primary School which Mathew was one of the participants.

With the acquired knowledge and skills, he started a back-up business – poultry.

He was one of the recent participants of SME Corporation’s Improve Your Business (IYB) at the PFM Centre in Anglimp, Jiwaka Province where has now registered his transport business with IPA through SME Corporation’s subsidization program.

Mathew has also opened an account with Mi Bank, Mt. Hagen Branch as part of the IYB training.

Thursday August 13th, 2026:

SME CORPORATION RE-STRATEGIZES ITS BOTTOM-UP APPROACH TO SUPPORT MSMEs AT THE WARD AND DISTRICT LEVELS

SME Corporation has re-strategized its bottom-up approach to delivering key programs and projects by strengthening engagement with ward members and Local Level Government (LLG) presidents across districts.

As part of this approach, SME Corporation is working directly with ward leaders and local representatives to ensure its programs and services reach communities at the grassroots level.

As a pilot initiative, 37 ward members and representatives from the wards in the New Anglimp District of Jiwaka Province participated in the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Start Your Business – Micro Enterprise (SYB-ME) and Improve Your Business (IYB) training programmes, conducted by SME Corporation in the last 10 days.

A total of 118 participants attended the two ILO programs, comprising 89 participants under SYB-ME and 29 participants under IYB.

The SYB-ME participants are mainly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) operating in the informal sector, as well as aspiring entrepreneurs.

The IYB training was targeted at MSMEs who have already acquired the SYB-ME training and are already operating in the formal sector, while also supporting business owners seeking to further strengthen and formalize their enterprises.

As the mandated government agency responsible for MSME development under the SME Corporation Act 2014, SME Corporation also supported participants through its business formalization initiative.

More than half of the 118 participants have now formalized their businesses through SME Corporation’s business registration subsidization program. Under the program, participating MSMEs contributed 25 percent of the business registration cost, equivalent to K50, while SME Corporation subsidized the remaining 75 percent, equivalent to K100, payable to the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA).

President of New Anglimp LLG, Nickolas Kurua, expressed his appreciation to SME Corporation for bringing business development services directly to the people and supporting local entrepreneurs through the subsidization of business registration costs.

Participants also thanked SME Corporation for reducing the cost of formalizing their businesses and providing them with practical business development support.

The initiative is part of SME Corporation’s broader effort to take its services closer to communities, strengthen grassroots participation and support the transition of informal businesses into the formal economy.

This is not the first time SME Corporation has subsidized business registration costs for program participants. In 2024, participants of the Start Your Business – Micro Enterprise program in Mul-Baiyer District also benefited from SME Corporation’s business registration subsidization initiative.

ONE HUNDRED FORTY-THREE PARTICIPANTS REMINDED NOT TO MIX BUSINESS WITH CULTURE

Friday July 31st, 2026: One hundred and forty-three people from Dei District in Western Highlands Province were reminded not to mix business with culture.

The Managing Director of SME Corporation Mr. Petrus Ralda reminded the participants of a two weeks Start Your Business – Micro Enterprise (SYB-ME) training during a graduation ceremony at Muglamp Local Level Government area in Dei District, Western Highlands Province.
“Bisnis ino save go wantaim kalsa. Yu wanpla man o meri laik statim SME wok, yu mas wanpla man o meri g*t stronpla het long statim bisnis. Yu noken yusim mani blong bisnis blong yu long wokim kastom wok.”

Mr. Ralda urged the one hundred and forty-three participants to have two bank accounts – business and personal.

He said this will help them manage their funds in their businesses as well as for personal use.

Participants were very satisfied and expressed satisfaction with the Start Your Business – Micro Enterprise training.

One of the participants Mr. Lucas Romba said “bifo mipla harim SME, tasol mipla no save em wanem samting. Nau mipla kisim training na mipla lainim planti samting long sait blong wokim bisnis olsem long lukautim na seivim mani gut. SYB training tu ikisim Mi Bank kam long mipla long ples em mekim isi long mipla long openim ol akaunt blong mipla na mipla amamas tru.”

Another participant Julie Sent also expressed gratitude for the Start Your Business – Micro Enterprise training. “Ol samting mipla lainim long displa training long statim na ronim bisnis, em ol samting ol save go skul long kolij na univesiti long kisim save long displa. Tasol mipla ol lain long ples i lainim displa ol samting insait long displa training em helpim tru tingting blong mipla long sait blong wokim na ronim bisnis. The Start Your Business – Micro Enterprise or SYB-ME training was facilitated by SME Corporation’s Network Partner Trainers from 20th – 31st July 2026 at two seperate venues Muglamp and Kotna LLGs.

Meantime, SME Corporation acknowledged Mi Bank – Mt. Hagen Branch staff for their assistance in opening bank accounts for the one hundred and forty -three participants.

Friday July 24th, 2026: Under an existing partnership between SME Corporation and the International Training Institute (ITI) 25 students have graduated from the International Labour Organization's Start Your Business (SYB) Entrepreneurship training facilitated by SME Corporation.

The two weeks SYB training started on July 13th, and ended with a graduation on July 24th, 2026.

The 25 participants are second-year students currently studying Diploma in Small Business Management, Human Capital Management, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Marketing Management and Information Communication Technology.

This number now brings up the total number of students from ITI who have received the SYB Entrepreneurship training to 50 under the current partnership between SME Corporation and the International Training Institute.

The first batch of students received the same training last year.

Present to witness the graduation were officials from SME Corporation and the International Training Institute.

Mr. Peter Amos, Manager - Know About Business, represented SME Corporation at the graduation.

He encouraged the students to start small in doing business.

"You can start your business with one K10, K20, it doesn't matter. It's the perseverance that sees one succeed in business by overcoming obstacles."

Meantime, the Dean of Studies at the International Training Institute, Dr. Ashok Jayaraman challenged the 25 students to get into business and do something for themselves to earn an income after the completion of their studies.
