๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡พ | In the spirit of national patriotism and pride, staff of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) joined the Office of the Prime Minister - Guyana, along with its agencies, on Friday, for a cultural activity commemorating Guyanaโ€™s 60th Diamond Jubilee Independence Anniversary.

The event showcased Guyanaโ€™s rich and diverse heritage through performances including traditional African and East Indian dances, musical renditions, singing, drumming, and displays of ethnic cultural attire. Representing each of the ethnic groups in Guyana, agencies also offered a variety of delicious cuisines, as well as showcased various traditional artifacts, creating a vibrant celebration of the nationโ€™s history, cultural diversity and unity.

The GEA partnered with the Confucius Institute at University of Guyana (CIUG) to provide attendees with an authentic, immersive experience of Chinese culture and arts under the slogan โ€˜Taste of Chinaโ€™. The display featured a wide-range of dishes such as wanton soup, Yangzhou fried rice, char sui pork, Wenzhou fried rice noodles, fried chicken fillet, sautรฉed beef and broccoli, and Chinese dumplings, to name a few.

There were also musical renditions played on the Guzheng, an ancient Chinese musical string instrument. In addition, persons also had the opportunity to play a fun chopstick game ( ็ญทๅญๆฏ”่ต›) and win uniquely designed flat folding fans originating from China as small tokens.

Prime Minister, Brigadier (Retโ€™d) the Honourable Mark Phillips delivered the feature address at the event. During his remarks, Prime Minister Phillips reflected on the strides and transformative progress achieved by our great nation as a cultural melting pot, while highlighting the invaluable contributions of Guyanaโ€™s ethnic groups to the rich cultural and social fabric that unites us and defines our national identity. READ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡พ | CEO of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), Dr. Mahender Sharma, yesterday facilitated a discussion with members of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) focused on the importance of businesses investing in grid-connected systems, particularly as Guyana rolls out the LCDS Grid-Connected Solar Household initiative.

He explained how local businesses can invest in grid-tied systems by installing solar panels on rooftops or other structures to generate electricity for their buildings during daylight hours. When additional energy is required, it is supplied by GPL, while any excess power is fed back into the grid, with users receiving credits on their utility bills in return.

Additionally, he noted that the LCDS Grid-Connected Solar Household initiative encourages local homeowners to adopt rooftop solar technology to harness solar energy and reduce their electricity bills. A typical 5 kWp (kilowatt-peak) rooftop solar system costs around G$1.2 million and generates approximately 7,884 kWh (kilowatt-hour) per year, reducing annual electricity expenses by an estimated G$342,402 (roughly G$28,533 per month), based on the current GPL residential tariff. The investment pays for itself in about 3.5 years and helps reduce carbon emissions by roughly 5.5 tonnes of COโ‚‚ annually.

For business owners and enterprises, larger grid-connected solar systems offer the same benefits of significantly reducing energy and operating costs. Businesses can further enhance these benefits by integrating electric vehicle charging and adopting energy-efficient technologies, such as LED lighting, smart office equipment, inverter air conditioning units, and refrigerators, along with other energy efficiency measures.

Overall, the initiative is designed to encourage energy-saving practices, promote renewable energy development, and foster a culture of sustainability in Guyana. It will also support reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening energy security, and contributing to long-term economic growth.
