The Office of the Leader of the Opposition strongly condemns what it views as the continued and escalating ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐๐จ๐ง. ๐๐ณ๐ซ๐ฎ๐๐๐ข๐ง ๐๐จ๐ก๐๐ฆ๐๐, ๐.๐., ๐ฆ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ฏ๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ (๐๐๐), ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐.
The events that began on September 3, 2026, and have continued for more than 38 hours represent an alarming exercise of police powers against the constitutional Opposition and demand immediate accountability.
At approximately ๐๐:๐๐๐ก๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐, while the Leader of the Opposition was discharging his constitutional duties and responding to information received concerning alleged serious corruption surrounding a property in Leonora, immediately adjoining the President of Guyanaโs private residence, and alleged connections involving the President and one of his attorneys, Mr. Mohamed was detained and taken to the Leonora Police Station.
During the events that followed, the Leader of the Opposition, WIN Members of Parliament ๐๐ซ. ๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ซ๐ค๐๐ซ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ. ๐๐ง๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐๐ฐ๐ข๐ฌ, Regional Councillor ๐๐๐๐ง ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง, and others were detained or arrested.
Mr. Mohamed was subsequently released, only to be ๐๐ซ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ง ๐๐ญ ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐:๐๐๐ก๐ซ๐ฌ, ๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐ฌ ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ฌ๐, in circumstances reportedly arising from his walking along the roadway. He was later released for a second time.
The spectacle of the constitutional Leader of the Opposition being arrested, released and then re-arrested within hours, while seeking to discharge his duties, raises the gravest concerns about the use of police authority against the political Opposition.
๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
๐๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐, ๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐จ ๐๐จ๐ก๐๐ฆ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ were also arrested in connection with an investigation into alleged unauthorised or suspected drone activity. While the Leader of the Opposition was subsequently released, ๐๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐, ๐๐จ๐ก๐๐ฆ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ซ๐๐ฆ๐๐ข๐ง ๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ง ๐๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐๐ซ.
At approximately ๐๐:๐๐๐ก๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐, two members of the Opposition Leaderโs staff were handcuffed, placed in the back of a police vehicle and driven away from Leonora. Their electronic devices were confiscated and, according to information received by this Office, they were not informed where they were being taken.
Their families, colleagues and legal representatives were consequently left attempting to establish their whereabouts.
Between approximately ๐๐:๐๐๐ก๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐:๐๐๐ก๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐, Police transported staff members, while still in custody, to their respective homes and conducted searches during the middle of the night. Their families were terrified by the late-night searches. The Office is informed that ๐ง๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐.
The detainees were subsequently subjected to repeated transfers between police locations, including ๐๐๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ซ๐, ๐๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ก๐ซ๐ข, ๐๐๐ง ๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฅ, ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ก๐๐ง ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐๐๐-๐๐ง-๐๐จ๐จ๐ฉ.
At approximately ๐๐:๐๐๐ก๐ซ๐ฌ, one staff member was booked at Den Amstel Police Station, while another was booked at Tuschen Police Station at approximately ๐๐:๐๐๐ก๐ซ๐ฌ.
The repeated movement of detainees throughout the night and thereafter, coupled with the uncertainty experienced by their families as to their location and condition, is deeply disturbing.

As of today, ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐, Eugene Thorne, Mario Mohamed and Dwayne Ross have remained in police custody for more than 38 hours.
The Office has received troubling reports concerning the conditions in which they are being held and their deteriorating state of distress after prolonged detention and repeated transfers.
Their families are increasingly concerned about their physical and emotional wellbeing and report being ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ฆ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ง๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ข๐ซ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฐ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ.
Even more seriously, the Office has been informed that the detainees have been ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐๐ฅ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ฌ๐๐ฅ.
The constitutional protections afforded to persons in police custody are not privileges to be granted or withheld at the convenience of the State. Any obstruction of meaningful access to legal counsel raises grave constitutional and due-process concerns.

The investigation is said to concern alleged unauthorised drone activity in the vicinity of the Presidentโs residence.
The position communicated to the Office is unequivocal: ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐๐.
More importantly, the Leader of the Opposition promptly requested that investigators examine the droneโs ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ-๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ-๐ก๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ญ๐.
That electronic information is capable of objectively establishing whether the drone was flown, when it was flown and its actual flight path.
The Leader of the Oppositionโs attorney has formally recorded that Police ranks ๐ซ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ฑ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐โ๐ฌ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ซ๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ฌ, notwithstanding that such information could be directly relevant to establishing or disproving the allegations.
If the purpose of this investigation is genuinely to establish the truth, then potentially exculpatory technical evidence cannot simply be ignored while individuals remain behind bars.
The Guyana Police Force must explain why this objective evidence has not been examined and preserved.

Police have also continued to retain property belonging to or in the lawful possession of the Leader of the Opposition.
His attorney has formally demanded the return of ๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ซ ๐ฉ๐ก๐จ๐ง๐๐ฌ, ๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฏ๐๐ก๐ข๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ, ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ฐ๐๐ญ๐๐ซ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ญ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ฒ being retained by Police.
Of particular constitutional concern is the continued retention of the Leader of the Oppositionโs cellular devices, which contain sensitive and confidential information associated with the discharge of his duties, including information reportedly supplied to him concerning allegations of corruption and wrongdoing.
Other Members of Parliament whose devices were taken have had their phones returned, while the cellular devices of the Leader of the Opposition continue to be retained.
The Police must account for the legal and evidential basis upon which these devices and other property continue to be held.

At the same time, the Office is informed that objective drone flight data capable of assisting investigators in establishing the truth has not been examined.

The Guyana Police Force is an institution of the State and must serve ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐๐ฎ๐ฒ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ๐, irrespective of political affiliation. Police powers must never become instruments through which a government intimidates its political opponents, their employees or their families.

The Office of the Leader of the Opposition therefore demands that the Guyana Police Force immediately:
