Ms. La Rose, Education Officer – Literacy, along with Ms. Naomi Yamochi, recently conducted an engaging training session with parents and teachers of Rupunau Primary and Nursery. The focus of the session was to strengthen foundational literacy skills, particularly understanding the alphabet through letters and sounds, as well as identifying and applying long and short vowel sounds.

Parents and teachers were actively involved in a variety of practical, hands-on activities designed to support children’s learning both in the classroom and at home. These interactive strategies demonstrated simple yet effective ways to build reading skills, reinforce pronunciation, and encourage early literacy development.

The session emphasized the importance of collaboration between home and school. When parents are equipped with the right tools and techniques, they can confidently support their children’s reading journey. Together, we can create a strong foundation for lifelong learning and ensure that every child becomes a confident and capable reader. 2026/04/30

On April 30, 2026, a meaningful and engaging meeting was held with the parents and dormitory students of Sand Creek Secondary. The session, led by Ms. La Rose- Education Officer- Literacy (Department of Education)and Mr. Khan, focused on the vital roles and responsibilities of parents in shaping the lives of their children, especially during the teenage years.

During the discussion, it was highlighted that many of our adolescents are making decisions that can lead to negative consequences. As such, parents were encouraged to be intentional in guiding, supporting, and modelling positive behaviours. Children often learn by example, and when parents demonstrate respect, discipline, and good decision-making, these values are more likely to be reflected in their children.

Dormitory students were also reminded of the importance of making wise choices, staying focused on their education, and upholding the values taught at home and school. Together, parents, teachers, and students must work collaboratively to create a supportive environment that fosters growth, responsibility, and success.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Headmistress and staff of Sand Creek Secondary for providing the opportunity to engage with both parents and students. Let us continue to build strong partnerships for the benefit of our children’s future.
