Yesterday, the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit (SODVPU) team, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works’ Linden to Mabura Hill Road Project, conducted a community outreach in the 47 Miles community, Region Ten.

The session saw participants receiving information on the Family Violence Act (FVA), the services offered by the Unit, the different types of abuse, and the cycle of abuse, while also engaging in discussions aimed at raising awareness and promoting support for victims of domestic violence.

On Wednesday, the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit (SODVPU) Linden team participated in the CPCE Professional Development Day for its 2024 cohort.

Officers from the Unit delivered a presentation on “Mental Health and Abuse,” highlighting the impact of abuse on mental well-being and the importance of recognising and responding to these issues.

The team was joined by Dr. Datson of the Linden Hospital Complex’s Psychiatric Unit, who shared the platform and provided valuable insights into the mental health aspects of abuse.

Our team from the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit (SO&DVPU) recently conducted a community walkabout in Parfaite Harmonie, Region Three, where they engaged with residents and shared important information about the Unit, the services it provides, and the support available to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

The outreach also aimed to raise awareness, promote prevention, and encourage persons experiencing abuse to seek help.

Elder abuse awareness outreach held in Region Three and Seven

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security through its Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit (SO&DVPU) recently hosted an Elder Abuse Awareness outreach at the Vreed-en-Hoop Post Office in Region Three and in Bartica, Region Seven.

During the exercise, Ministry officials engaged senior citizens, members of the public and Police Officers in conversations about recognising and preventing elder abuse. Informational brochures, pens and reusable bags were distributed, while participants were encouraged to learn more about the support services available to older persons.

The outreach also provided an opportunity to hear concerns and recommendations from residents, including discussions with the Vice Chairman of Region Seven on matters affecting senior citizens.

The Ministry remains committed to raising awareness and promoting the safety, dignity and well-being of older persons across Guyana.

Ministry strengthens workplace awareness through GBV Training at NIS Leonora

The Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit (SODVPU), in collaboration with the Gender Affairs Bureau, recently facilitated a training session at the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) Office in Leonora as part of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security’s ongoing efforts to promote safe, respectful, and inclusive workplaces.

The session provided participants with valuable insights into Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Sexual Offences, Sexual Harassment, and the Family Violence Act, equipping them with a greater understanding of the legal framework, available support services, and appropriate responses to individuals experiencing violence and abuse.

Participants actively engaged throughout the training, contributing to meaningful discussions and seeking clarification on key issues related to prevention, protection, and workplace responsibility. The interactive nature of the session reinforced the importance of creating environments where respect, equality, and accountability are upheld.

Through partnerships with agencies such as the National Insurance Scheme, the Ministry continues to expand awareness of gender-based violence and strengthen institutional capacity to respond effectively to these issues. These initiatives form part of the Ministry’s broader commitment to fostering informed workplaces and empowering stakeholders to contribute to safer communities across Guyana.

SODVPU inspires students at Education Department Career Fair

The Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit (SODVPU) of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security recently participated in a Career Fair hosted by the Education Department of Region One, engaging students on the Ministry’s vital role in supporting individuals, families, and communities across Guyana while highlighting career opportunities in the social services sector.

Throughout the event, students visited the Ministry’s booth to learn about the work of the SODVPU, including its efforts in domestic violence prevention, community outreach, counselling, referrals, and family support services. Representatives also introduced students to the wide range of professional careers available within the Ministry, including roles in social work, counselling, administration, and community development.

By participating in initiatives such as the Career Fair, the Ministry continues to raise awareness of the essential support services available to the public while inspiring the next generation of professionals committed to serving and strengthening communities across Guyana.

Ministry launches BRAVE Circle programme to empower young Boys
The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security officially launched its BRAVE Circle programme at Camillie’s Academy locations across Guyana on June 16, 2026, marking another step in its commitment to preventing gender-based violence through early intervention and positive youth development.

The four-day initiative brings together 15 boys, selected by the school, in a safe and supportive environment where they will develop positive values, strengthen their character, and build essential life skills while committing to becoming advocates against gender-based violence.

Facilitators Quincy Wong, Kwame Gilhuys, Thenga Adams, and Terrence Mohabir will guide participants through BRAVE Modules One to Four, covering topics including identity, healthy relationships, emotional awareness, effective communication, respect, accountability, and positive decision-making. Through interactive discussions, practical activities, and guided reflection, the programme encourages participants to challenge harmful gender stereotypes, develop empathy, and build the confidence to become respectful young leaders within their families, schools, and communities.

By investing in adolescent boys through meaningful dialogue and skills development, the Ministry continues to foster a generation of young men who are equipped to make responsible choices and contribute to building safer, healthier, and more inclusive communities.
