End HIV PBC is the official page for Palm Beach County’s Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative, which is part of a national strategy that aims to end the HIV epidemic in the United States by 2030. The initiative aims to reduce new HIV infections by 75% by 2025, and 90% by 2030. The first five years of EHE, called Phase 1, is focused on 57 priority jurisdictions, including Palm Beach Co

unty, where 50% of the nation’s new HIV infections occurred in 2016 and 2017. The County’s EHE initiative is focused on community engagement and education.

Last week, Palm Beach County Ending the HIV Epidemic was at the Mid County Senior Center in honor of Long Term Survivor Awareness Day. We had a great time with the participants, who got to spin our wheel and debunk myths about HIV and aging with HIV. The participants learned a lot, and taught our staff a thing or two about history as well.

Today is HIV Long Term Survivor Awareness Day. Since the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, people with HIV have been living longer and healthier lives. However, aging with HIV is not without its challenges, including what is called "Survivors Syndrome." We use this day to celebrate those who are still with us living with HIV, and continue to work toward providing equitable access to culturally competent services for all people with HIV.

We thank Commissioner Sara Baxter for sponsoring a proclamation honoring Women and Girls HIV AIDS Awareness Day. The awareness day is observed annually on March 10th to raise awareness about the impact of HIV on women and girls in the United States and around the world.

This year’s theme is "Prevention and Testing at Every Age. Care and Treatment at Every Stage.” This theme emphasizes the need to further prevention efforts and ensure equity in HIV care and treatment.

In Palm Beach County, women are:

34% of all people living with HIV
27% percent of new HIV diagnoses in 2022
40% of HIV-related deaths, with black women accounting for 35% of all HIV related deaths
41% of all persons age 13-24 who are living with HIV, and black women account for 33% of all persons age 13-24 who are living with HIV

And, 22% of Women with HIV are not receiving HIV Care and treatment.

Today, February 28, marks the third annual HIV is Not a Crime Awareness Day (HINAC Day). The Sero Project, in collaboration with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF), first observed this day in 2022 to spread awareness about outdated HIV-specific laws and to end HIV criminalization
We know that living with HIV/AIDS is not a crime; however, in more than thirty states, people are facing certain charges and being sent to prison because of circumstances surrounding their HIV status.
After more than 40 years of HIV research and significant biomedical advancements to treat and prevent HIV, most HIV criminalization laws do not reflect current scientific and medical evidence. Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. requires addressing all barriers to HIV prevention and care.

Current scientific and medical evidence should be what informs state laws and practices that currently criminalize actions taken by people with HIV.

Also, states should consider updating or repealing all outdated laws and practices because many of these laws were passed at a time when very little was known about HIV, including how HIV was transmitted and should be treated.

These laws have not increased disclosure and may discourage HIV testing and increase stigma against people living with HIV.

HIV is no longer a death sentence, and with the proper medications, the risk of transmitting the virus is nearly non-existent.

On March 6th at 12pm, Palm Beach County Ending the HIV Epidemic is hosting SERO Project Co-founder Kamaria Laffrey for an interactive lunchtime webinar to discuss HIV criminalization in Florida. We will learn what HIV Criminalization is, what it looks like in Florida, how it impacts People with HIV, and what can be done about it. Grab your lunch, pull up a chair and join us for this educational event. To register, please click the link below:

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Hydeia Broadbent, a lifetime HIV/AIDS activist. Hydeia was born with HIV and abandoned at a hospital, where she was adopted by the Broadbent Family. At 7 years old, she appeared on Nickelodeon with Magic Johnson as the first black child to speak out about living with HIV. She continued to be an outspoken advocate for people with HIV, participating in activities and programs around the world.

We had the privilege of hosting Hydeia for a talk last year for Zero HIV Stigma Day, where she shared some of her struggles growing up with HIV. We think about her family and friends during this time, and remember her impact on the community.
