This September, we bring historical memory to life through a series of War of Resistance commemorative programmes—enabling everyone to remember history, honour martyrs, and cherish peace🕊️

🏺 Youth Heading to Yan’an: Patriotic Youth During the War of Resistance
The exhibition illustrates how the Communist Party of China led the resistance during the War of Resistance, offering an overview of the patriotic youths from across the country and international friends who travelled to Yan’an to support the war effort. It also recounts the poignant story of the deep bond between Yan’an and Hong Kong amid the flames of war.

Hong Kong Museum of History (HKMH) has invited Professor Cheung Sui Wai, Department Chairman of the Department of History, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to present this lecture on ‘Hong Kong Story’ Permanent Exhibition 🎤, in which Professor Cheung will draw on legendary tales, including the stories of Ho Zhen, the Song dynasty princess, and the founding ancestors of the great clans of the New Territories, to provide a detailed account of the history of Hong Kong, with particular focus on the New Territories, during the Ming and Qing dynasties. 📖

【一文認識盂蘭節👻】

農曆七月十五日嘅盂蘭節，佛教稱為盂蘭盆會，道教叫中元節，民間就普遍稱為鬼節。佢嘅起源眾説紛紜，其中一個説法就要從一個宣揚孝道嘅故事講起．．．

📖 目連救母─盂蘭節由此起
相傳佛陀弟子目連發現母親👩‍🦱死後墮入餓鬼道，受盡飢餓之苦，於是向佛陀求助。佛陀指引佢喺農曆七月十五日將百味五果放入「盂蘭盆」，用嚟供養僧眾，藉功德解救母親。呢個故事喺民間廣為流傳，而「盂蘭盆會」亦由南朝梁武帝起開始盛行。

🏮 唐代皇室都重視嘅節日
唐代係盂蘭盆會發展嘅鼎盛時期。歷史記載，武則天在位時會親身去觀賞盂蘭盆會儀式；唐代宗更會參與盂蘭盆會祭祖，為萬民祈福。可見隨住時代發展，盂蘭節已經由原先供養僧眾，轉向敬祭祖先，再演變成現今用來祭祀亡魂嘅民間習俗。

🌙 香港人嘅盂蘭節習俗
除咗燒街衣，香港各區每年都有相關嘅主題活動，其中「香港潮人盂蘭勝會」更喺2011年被列入國家級非物質文化遺產名錄。為進一步推廣潮人盂蘭文化，香港潮屬社團總會每年都會舉辦「盂蘭文化節」，設有花牌、抽紗公仔、粿品、神功戲棚等傳統工藝➕搶孤競賽、盆供堆疊賽、歷史展覽等創新活動，大家記得唔好錯過🎉

香港水上人族群亦有獨特嘅盂蘭節儀式，例如喺大澳、長洲等地舉行嘅「遊水陸」，用載住祭品嘅舢舨巡祭水域，祈求水陸平安。🚤

今個農曆七月，不妨留意一下香港多元而獨特嘅盂蘭文化，重新認識呢個流傳千年嘅節日。

【Understanding the Yu Lan Festival 👻】

The Yu Lan Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, is also known as the 'Ghost Festival' in Hong Kong. The origins are myriad, but one of the most popular tales begins with a story about filial piety…

📖 Mulian Rescues His Mother — The Origins of the Yu Lan Festival
According to legend, Mulian, a disciple of the Buddha, discovered that his mother👩‍🦱 had fallen into the realm of hungry ghosts and was suffering from severe hunger and pain. He therefore sought help from the Buddha. The Buddha instructed him to use a 'Yu Lan Basin' to fill with various fruits and offerings, and offer them to the monks on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. His meritorious deeds through this offering are believed to have saved his mother. This story is widely spread among the people and the 'Yu Lan Festival' became popular from the time of Emperor Wu of the Southern Liang dynasty.

🏮 A Festival Valued by the Royal Family of the Tang dynasty
The Tang dynasty marked the heyday of the Yu Lan Festival. Historical records state that Empress Wu herself even attended the rituals, while Emperor Tang Daizong participated in the festival to worship ancestors and pray for the blessings of all people. As the festival evolved, it gradually transitioned from clergy offerings to venerating ancestors and eventually evolved into the current practice of appeasing the souls of the dead.

🌙 Yu Lan Festival Customs in Hong Kong
Besides burning paper offerings on the street, various festival events are held across Hong Kong every year. Among them, the 'Yu Lan Festival of the Hong Kong Chiu Chow Community' was inscribed onto the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. To promote the festival culture further, the Federation of Hong Kong Chiu Chow Community Organizations annually host the 'Yu Lan Cultural Festival' featuring traditional crafts like flower board, drawn work figurine, Chiu Chow sticky rice dumplings and Bamboo Shed Theatre plus innovative activities such as festival treats and offering competitions, and historical exhibitions. Don't miss out!🎉

The boat people of Hong Kong also have their unique Yu Lan tradition. For example, the 'Land and Sea Parade' in Tai O and Cheung Chau, where sampans travel around the waters carrying offerings to wandering ghosts and pray for peace on both land and water. 🚤

【源自唐代嘅最強保鑣 — 門神】🚪

喺新年貼門神一直都係香港圍村及宗祠嘅傳統，但原來門神背後，藏住一段唐太宗同兩位愛將之間嘅故事！

📖大將搖身變門神
據說唐太宗喺夜間經常聽到宮門外有鬼魅呼嚎，徹夜難眠，於是兩位大將秦叔寶同尉遲敬德就全副武裝在宮門站崗，令太宗得以安睡。

但唐太宗始終唔忍心兩位愛將每晚捱更抵夜，靈機一觸，叫畫師將兩人嘅威武形象畫喺宮門之上。呢個做法後來流傳民間，成為家傳戶曉嘅貼門神傳統。

🗣️ 門神習俗變廣東話俗語？
「貼錯門神」喺廣東話入面，有面左左或關係不和嘅意思。門神嘅正確貼法應係「面對面」，代表同心協力。如果貼錯方向，變成「背對背」，就驅鬼都唔齊心啦！

🚪 尋找身邊嘅門神
新界嘅圍村，例如錦田吉慶圍、粉嶺龍躍頭等，依然保留新年貼「年畫門神」嘅習俗；大廟灣天后廟、吉澳天后宮等古廟嘅木門上面，更有精細嘅門神雕刻！

【大唐戰馬賽事開跑！昭陵六駿同場較量🏇】

自古以來，中國人對馬🐴就有深厚嘅情意結，唐太宗李世民更為六匹陪佢南征北戰統一全國嘅駿馬製作咗石刻雕塑，放喺「昭陵」陪伴自己走完帝王一生嘅最後一程。

呢六匹戰馬都係唐太宗精心挑選，速度快🏃、耐力高💪，多次喺戰場幫佢突圍脫困🏇！如果佢哋一齊比賽，究竟邊一匹可以成為「頭馬」🏆？

【The Great Tang’s ‘Steed Race’ begins! Six Steeds of Zhaoling Mausoleum face off 🏇】

Throughout history, the Chinese have shared a deep bond with horses🐴. Li Shimin, the Emperor Taizong of Tang, even commissioned stone reliefs of six steeds that served him through countless battles to unify the nation, placing them at the Zhaoling Mausoleum to accompany him on the final stretch of his imperial life.

All six steeds were handpicked by Emperor Taizong for their speed🏃 and stamina💪, having assisted him in numerous battlefield breakthroughs🏇! If they raced side by side, which one would stand out and become the ‘Winning Horse‘? 🏆
