On Unleash Chiang
U.S. President Trump sent troops to Iran, eliminating the tyrant and rescuing the people from dire suffering; all under heaven rejoice. At this moment of confrontation, Secretary of State Marco Rubio prepared to strengthen military forces and uttered a proverb: “Unleash Chiang,” as if to awaken the commander who devoted his life to the Nationalist Revolution.
During the Cold War, Chiang Kai-shek planned to launch a counteroffensive to retake the mainland. The United States, concerned about regional stability, placed many restrictions on the actions of the Nationalist army. Thus the phrase “Unleash Chiang” circulated among the anti-communist right wing in the United States and became a saying meaning to launch a full-scale offensive.
Secretary Rubio keeps a golden sword hanging in his room. It was presented to him by a Republican governor, and the blade bears the inscription “Chiang.” The governor told Rubio about Chiang’s ideals and spirit. Therefore, for Rubio, “Unleash Chiang” is not a casual remark but a warrior’s oath.
The United States is the “land of the free and the home of the brave” (as its national anthem says). Americans admire courage and martial spirit, and thus respect Chiang’s steadfast and unyielding character. Faced with the Japanese Empire and the Communist bandits, Chiang never surrendered and fought to the very end, with the United States standing beside him.
While some people in Taiwan simplify Cold War history and regard Chiang merely as the culprit of the “White Terror,” Secretary Rubio instead reveres him as a warrior who resisted tyranny. The difference in perspective could hardly be greater.
Now the dawn of freedom in Iran has appeared. It is hoped that the Iranian people will summon their courage and reclaim their nation—Make Iran Great Again. President Trump’s act of mourning the suffering people and punishing the guilty accords with the righteous principles of the Confucian tradition: The people are grateful, welcoming the army with baskets of food and pitchers of drink. Heaven bless the righteous forces; tyranny will surely fall.

【Unleash Chiang
