~VILA HEDWIG ZIMDIN-REGENHART~

Villa "Hedwig Zimdin-Regenhart" is situated in the area of St. James, work of architect Heinrich Lauterbach. It was constructed during the period from 1935 to 1937. It is common belief that the construction of the villa was commissioned by William Zimdin for his wife Hedwig, the same one who commissioned the construction of the villa Sheherezade. However, William and Hedwig divorced in 1926, and she remarried in 1931 to Oscar Regenhart. The set of circumstances that left them without this villa can probably be linked to II. world war and nationalization, so the villa has been used since the 1950s as a resort of Jugobanka, one of the largest banks in the former state.
Let’s hope someone will restore its old glow.

Social welfare centre within an old palace, in Miho Pracat street. Everything but ordinary.

👉Centuries ago, the loyalty of the Dubrovnik population to the social order and hierarchical structure of government was atypical compared to other cities in the Adriatic. The nobility had a privileged position, but they ensured the well-being of the rest of the population. The state was mindful of social welfare (the poor were sustained by the government), it secured material-life conditions (waterworks, sewage, public fountains, no shortage of food), at earliest it organised an orphanage, poorhouses, nursing homes and hospitals, it paid the doctors and apothecaries who treated everyone without charge, from the Rector to the city poor.👈

~CHURCH OF ST. JAMES PIPUNAR~
The Church of St. James Pipunar was first mentioned in 1225 when it was given to the newly arrived Dominicans. The prefix "Pipunar" comes from the fact that once, for the feast of this saint, on July 25th, local families would serve ripe pipun (melon). This church always had a nickname because inside of the walls there was one more church bearing the name of the same saint.
👉Saint James is the patron saint of Spain and, according to a legend, his remains are held in Santiago de Compostela. The traditional pilgrimage to the grave of the saint, has been the most popular pilgrimage for European Catholics from the Early Middle Ages onwards. 👈

Čingrija family obviously had interest for the items/coats of arms of old noble families from Dubrovnik. It would be interesting to know how did they got their hands on these that belong to Gozze and Giorgi family.

~VILLA ČINGRIJA~

Melkior Čingrija (April 14th 1873. - December 8th 1949.) was a lawyer and a politician from Dubrovnik; he is believed to have been a mason. Melkior belonged to a social circle gathered around the National Bank of the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which he was vice-governor of, while his close associate was Georg Weifert, a banker, industrialist and the Grand Commander of the Grand Masonic Lodge of Yugoslavia.
One more indicator supporting the above written is the sphinx located in front of his villa.
As a Masonic emblem, the sphinx has been adopted as a symbol of mystery, and as such often is found as a decoration sculptured in front of Masonic temples, or engraved at the header of Masonic documents.
Sphinxes had an equal appeal to artists and designers of the Romanticism and Historicism movements in the 19th century. Most of these sphinxes alluded to the Greek sphinx and the myth of Oedipus, rather than the Egyptian.

I leave it up to you to decide what Melkior's sphinx truly symbolizes.

We are lucky to have had him in Dubrovnik, where he pressed the pause button on some moments... ⏸️

~NESPOLA~ 🌿

This exotic tree (loquat) was brought to Dubrovnik long ago by our sailors, all the way from China.
It's an evergreen plant from the Rosaceae family.

When you see its fruit being sold on the green market or in the backyards of old houses you know that the summer is here. They are the sweetest when soft and orange. The flavor is a mix of peach, citrus and mild mango.
We use them to make brandy, liqueur and jam.

This nespola tree is located in a street named Plovani skalini.

👉There is an interesting verdict regarding a tree that has been passed during the time when Dubrovnik was an independent republic. A patrician, Marin Sekundo Zamagna, pulled out a young fir tree, and for that he was sentenced to ten days of isolation in the fortress of St. John.👈

~DENTES ET AURICULAE~

Brackets (lat. dentes - teeth) come in multiple variants. They are built below the lower window frame or at the same level, to the left and to the right, in pairs. Their role differs, in some places they are used as shutter holders, while in some, inhabitants place a platform on the brackets, keep flowers there, dry the fruit (figs), even dry their clothes.

Brackets with holes (lat. auriculae - ears), on the upper window frame, were used to support a wooden bar on which curtains were hung to protect the inhabitants of the house from sunlight during the summer. The bars were also used to dry linen and wool on it. They exist in variations with one and multiple holes.

These, that I took photo of, are just amazing, and in excellent condition.
