Women’s right to healthcare is a sacred right as are all other women’s rights. Women bear life. According to the UNFPA, Haiti is the country with the highest maternal mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere. For every 100 women in labor, only 42 will be assisted by a professional while the remaining 58 are left to their own devices. The lack of psychological assistance in public institutions for survivors of violence in all its forms is another example of disregard for women’s rights. International Women’s Day stands for the battle for better access to healthcare; the battle for public hospitals to help protect women’s lives while they give life. Women are the bearers of life. When life bearers are not cared for it is life itself that becomes endangered. Cheers to women’s right to timely, dignified, appropriate, life saving care, for both body and mind.
