Every piece Shen Yun's orchestra plays is original, written for dances drawn from five thousand years of Chinese history. But the tradition behind that music is as old as the legends themselves. According to the ancients, music began as a gift.

Fuxi was a demigod who watched over the human world. He gave people fishnets when they went hungry and fire when raw meat made them sick.

One evening he passed a tree just as two phoenixes came to rest in it, and every bird nearby sang in chorus. He decided humans should have music too, and he carved wood from the tree into a zither.

Word of his creation reached the heavens, and the gods summoned him to play.
