Fresh U.S. Navy imagery from the Middle East shows an F/A-18E Super Hornet aboard USS George Washington apparently carrying two AGM-84K SLAM-ER family missiles. Released by NAVCENT Public Affairs on September 4, the footage was recorded during carrier operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area. The Navy has not officially confirmed the weapon identification or said the aircraft conducted a combat mission with them.

The visual configuration nevertheless stands out because SLAM-ER is a long-range, over-the-horizon precision weapon designed for land and maritime missions. NAVAIR says it uses GPS-assisted inertial navigation, imaging infrared guidance and a two-way data link, while the F/A-18E is an approved launch platform. The apparent twin carriage therefore highlights the carrier’s ability to support specialized standoff missions from sea.

The imagery also follows earlier July footage showing a Super Hornet with a possible SLAM-ER aboard USS Abraham Lincoln, adding further context to U.S. naval aviation activity in the region.

A recent US Army training exercise in Germany offered an unusual lesson in how armored units may operate in an environment dominated by drones. Captain Allan W. Watson, commander of Blackhawk Company, described how his Bradley crews faced persistent aerial surveillance from Ukraine’s 412th Nemesis Unmanned Systems Brigade during the Combined Resolve exercise at Hohenfels. The experience quickly pushed the American unit to adjust its methods. Bradleys were dispersed, positioned beneath tree cover, and moved through gullies, valleys, and other terrain that could reduce visibility from above.

Crews also avoided predictable routes and began paying closer attention to how their vehicles appeared to observers in the sky. Some armored vehicles were recorded as simulated losses during the exercise, but Watson said the experience demonstrated that armor remains useful when combined with flexible tactics.
