I have written to the Minister for Transport calling on him to initiate an investigation into the significant disparities in NCT failure rates between testing centres across the State, and particularly the exceptionally high failure rates recorded in Monaghan and Cavan.

The latest figures for 2025 show that 58.4% of vehicles tested in Cavan failed, the second-highest failure rate in the State. In Monaghan the failure rate was 57.8%, the fifth-highest nationally.

These figures stand in stark contrast to centres in other counties where failure rates are considerably lower.

People in Monaghan and Cavan deserve to know why.

REBEL FEST 2026 is tomorrow:

Weather looks good for tomorrow (we have covered seating and gazebos anyway, just in case) - gates open at 4pm and music starts at 5pm.

Today marks 45 years since the death of Kieran Doherty TD, elected in the Cavan–Monaghan by-election of 1981.

Elected while on hunger strike, his victory was a defining moment in Irish history, reflecting a powerful call for justice, democracy and self-determination.

He was never able to take his seat and died on 2 August 1981, aged 25, after 73 days on hunger strike.

We remember his courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy, which continues to inspire those working for equality and unity.
