Balbriggan Tidy Towns

Balbriggan Tidy Towns We are a voluntary group which promotes the Tidy Towns competition and ideals in Balbriggan. Or why not adopt a patch?

Get involved in Balbriggan Tidy Towns by joining our works party any Saturday morning @ 11am on Balbriggan beach or 10.30am at Moylaragh playground. Choose a public area which you think you could maintain, tell us about it and we will provide you with some resources and support. Balbriggan is a fabulous, sea-side town, steeped in history and natural beauty; we aim to promote and enhance its charm,

making it an even more pleasant place to live and visit. In the national Tidy Towns competition we have increased our score year on year and have won two Endeavour Awards in the last 5 years.

Thrilled to receive our prizes in the Midlands & East Regional Awards, of the 2025 SuperValu TidyTowns Competition, which took place in Dun Laoighaire on Monday evening.
The Pollinator award is very special. Our Balbriggan Gardening Group - SAVE the BEES work very hard to promote pollinators through our planting schemes, long flowering meadows, orchards, bee surveys, ban on insecticide etc etc
We're also very proud of the young people who have worked with us, particularly in Youthreach Balbriggan and Loreto Balbriggan, and helped secure our Young Persons award.
And, very nice to achieve our 2nd Bronze medal in a row. Thank you to all our volunteers and supporters who make this happen.

Looking forward to meeting new volunteers at the Believe Balbriggan Expo next Saturday.

If you are looking to volunteer some time in the community, talk to our reps next Saturday.

We have room for people who like bees, biodiversity, composting, digging, educating, growing, litter-picking, making, planting, painting, sustainability, surveying, watering, weeding, ... and socialising.

Delighted to see two new planting projects by Fingal County Council
1. FCC have planted another new, native, hedgerow in Moylaragh, which we asked for as one of our key priorities for 2026.
Hedgerows are of exceptional importance; serving as the primary habitat for biodiversity, a vital wildlife corridor, a key element of cultural landscape heritage, act as essential carbon sinks, prevent soil erosion and control flooding.
2. A lovely bulb mix was planted in the roundabout on the Harry Reynold's Road turning what used to be a bare, cobble-locked space into somewhere more natural. This is adjacent to the John Kindness art piece, "Harry's Wall", (still in progress, visible in the photo) which will commemorate local cycling hero Harry Reynolds.

Today, it was expanding our community orchard.
We got to plant a lot of fruit trees this morning, donated by Fingal County Council. Thanks to our team who ended up quite muddy as a result.
This is one of four community orchards we have planted, and while they'll provide fruit for us, more importantly they'll feed our pollinators and birds.

Delighted to see this project almost completed. We have worked for several months with the HSE Ireland to get new planters for in front of the Primary Care Centre. We even managed to get a new bench installed too!
Thank you to Robert in the HSE for the support. Breffni in Our Balbriggan - Get Involved for initiating the project, Islander Architects for their advice, the service users from the autism centre for helping to plant and agreeing to water, and of course our dedicated team of volunteers for pulling the whole thing together.

We think it adds interest, colour and biodiverdity to our main street.

Delighted to see Fingal County Council planting a new native, hedgerow in Millpond Park which we asked for as one of our key priorities for 2026.
A second hedgerow will also be delivered soon.
Hedgerows are of exceptional, critical importance in Ireland, serving as the primary habitat for biodiversity, a vital wildlife corridor, a key element of cultural landscape heritage, act as essential carbon sinks, prevent soil erosion and control flooding
Biodiversity Hotspots: hedgerows are crucial for wildlife, supporting birds, bats, bees, and butterflies. Over half of Ireland's 110 countryside bird species use them for nesting or foraging.
Wildlife Corridors: They allow species to move through the landscape, essential for ecological connectivity.
Environmental Benefits: They act as carbon sinks (0.66–3.3 t CO2/ha/year), reduce water runoff and soil erosion, and act as filters to protect water quality.

With the weather picking up it was lovely to get out planting and pruning for a change. We extended the hedge at the Garda Station and pruned our apple trees in Millpond Park.
A big thank "yew" to all our volunteers.
