Over the summer, quotes from Daniel O’Connell appeared throughout Cahersiveen in shop windows and public spaces, forming an informal walking trail that became a much-loved feature of the O’Connell 250 celebrations.

The town of Cahersiveen remains decorated with powerful quotes from Daniel O’Connell like these, proudly displayed in shopfronts and public spaces. They are a lasting tribute to The Liberator’s legacy.

It has been wonderful to see both visitors and locals stop to read and reflect. Over the past month, the displays have formed an informal “O’Connell walking trail” through the town.

These quotes are expected to remain in place as the energy of the celebrations lingers, drawing continued interest from those eager to explore the place where O’Connell was born and raised.

The Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church stands proudly at the heart of Cahersiveen, a striking backdrop to this week’s O’Connell 250 celebrations.

While the church is currently closed for internal construction works, its presence will be felt on Wednesday 6th August at 5.45pm, when it forms the backdrop to the O’Connell 250 Street Parade. Led by the Killorglin Pipe Band and a portrayal of Daniel O’Connell himself, the parade will pass by this iconic building on its way to the community celebration at the Fairfield.

A few things you might not know:
• It’s the only Catholic church in Ireland named after a layperson
• Construction began in 1888 and took over 20 years to complete
• Its imposing neo-Gothic design features Connemara marble and a tower visible from all approaches to town

Though it’s temporarily closed, the church remains a must-visit landmark for anyone exploring Cahersiveen and the legacy of The Liberator. We look forward to welcoming visitors again once it reopens later this year.

Cahersiveen is ready for O’Connell 250! 🇮🇪

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what’s in store for the full programme tomorrow - Wednesday, 6th August - as we mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O’Connell, in the very town where he was born.

A huge thank you, on the eve of this historic day, to everyone in the community who has supported the preparations: sharing the programme, putting up posters and flags, decorating shopfronts, and helping get The Penal Chapel, The Old Abbey, and the whole town looking its best.

We can’t wait to welcome you!

The two commemorative Blue Plaques marking key moments in Daniel O’Connell’s early life have now been fixed in place, ready to be officially unveiled tomorrow as part of the O’Connell 250 programme of events.

The second plaque, shown here, is now installed at the 18th-century Penal Chapel on Old Market Street, where O’Connell was baptised. Overlooking the Old Abbey and the resting place of his father’s grave, this site holds deep historical and personal significance. This will be officially unveiled at 5:15pm.

Join us tomorrow as we formally unveil both plaques - at Carhan and the Penal Chapel - honouring the places that shaped The Liberator.
