I always love catching shots like this.

This is a close-up of our native Irish Honey bees feeding on honey from comb. Every jar of our honey - and any honey - starts with thousands of foraging trips by the older bees, supported by the work of the younger bees of rhe colony.

There’s something almost magical about watching bees build honeycomb. Have a look at the end if my video to see them linking.

Honeycomb begins as tiny flakes of wax produced by young worker bees from special glands on their abdomen. The bees link and hang in chains. They pass the flakes on up the chain

Every single cell is built with incredible precision. The hexagon shape is one of the strongest and most efficient structures in nature, allowing bees to store the maximum amount of honey while using the least amount of wax and energy.
The comb becomes the structure of the hive. It stores honey and pollen, and also provides a nursery for baby bees.

World Bee Day is coming to an end, and due to the time of year, it was a busy one. Hive inspections in apiaries today, collected a swarm, and fitted in a honey delivery too.

I’m far more interested in being in an apiary with the bees than talking into a camera 😅 but the wonderful reminded me that people connect with stories, and the story behind our honey means so much to me.

At Galtee Honey Farm we work with the Native Irish Honey Bee, and creatfed its first Conservation Area. Set up by my father Micheál in 1970, we are 3rd and 4th generation beekeepers
