I am deeply disappointed by the decision taken by the HSE Drug Group earlier this week not to approve Skyclarys for people living with Friedreich’s Ataxia.

For those living with this rare and debilitating condition, this is about far more than access to a medication. It is about having access to a treatment that could improve their quality of life and give them hope for the future. I fully understand the frustration and devastation this decision has caused for individuals and families affected by Friedreich’s Ataxia, and I stand firmly with them.

The next meeting of the HSE Senior Management Team is scheduled to take place on 25th August, when the final decision will be made.

As a member of the HSE South-West Regional Health Forum, I am calling on the HSE Senior Management Team to approve Skyclarys at that meeting. I am also calling on An Taoiseach Micheál Martin to intervene in advance of the meeting and support access to this vital treatment for those living with Friedreich’s Ataxia.

We have all seen significant sums of public money wasted on projects in the past. Funding access to Skyclarys would not be money wasted - it would be money well spent. Investing in a treatment that has the potential to slow the progression of this devastating disease and improve people’s quality of life is an investment in patients, families and their future.

Skyclarys is already being publicly funded in a number of other European countries. Ireland should not allow people living with Friedreich’s Ataxia to fall behind their European counterparts. We need to follow the lead of those countries and ensure Irish patients have access to the same life-changing treatment.

People living with Friedreich’s Ataxia have already waited long enough. They deserve timely access to Skyclarys and the opportunity to benefit from a treatment that could make a meaningful difference to their lives.

I sincerely hope that the HSE Senior Management Team will make the right decision on 25th August and approve access to Skyclarys for everyone living with Friedreich’s Ataxia who could benefit from it.

📣 Have Your Say on the Future of Cobh Heritage Centre 📣

I am delighted, as a Board member of Cobh Heritage Centre, to be involved in the exciting redevelopment plans for this important landmark.

As part of a comprehensive programme of community and stakeholder consultation, we are inviting members of the public to attend a Public Consultation and Redevelopment Tour on Thursday, 20th August.

Tours will take place at 12.00pm and 4.00pm.

You MUST book in advance.

This consultation process includes public tours, surveys, focus groups and stakeholder meetings, ensuring that the voices of our community help shape the future of the Centre.

I would encourage everyone with an interest in Cobh’s heritage, tourism and future development to come along, learn more about the plans, and share your ideas. Your views are important, and this is a fantastic opportunity to help shape the next chapter of one of Cobh’s most significant attractions.

Places are limited, so advance registration is essential. Please scan the QR code on the poster to register for your preferred tour.

GARDAI ADVICE ON VACANT HOUSES

If your home is going to be vacant during the summer period;

1. Ask a trusted neighbour or family member to conduct frequent checks of the property at different times of the day to note any signs of trespassing or interference.

2. Ensure the house alarm is set.

3. Check all doors and windows are secure. (Use deadbolt locks if property is to be vacant for long periods).

4. Install timers on internal lights and motion detectors on external lights to make the house appear occupied and offer natural surveillance of the property.

5. Ensure that the building doesn't look neglected. Cut the grass etc.

SOCIAL MEDIA POST

If you are going on holiday and your home is going to be vacant, be mindful of what you post on social media. Even if you have enabled strict privacy settings, your holiday plans could be shared with unscrupulous people.

1. Don't post status updates about your holidays while you're still away.

2. Don't post pictures while you're away.

3. Respect other people’s privacy, don't tag others while you and they are on holidays.

4. Avoid posting upcoming travel plans.

5. Consider turning off the location sharing setting of your phone's camera app.

Buying tickets for concerts this summer? 🎫

‍‼️Beware of ticket scams‼️

🕵🏼 Do your research and find out where the ticket is coming from and what you can expect.

🧑🏻‍⚖️ If you buy from an unauthorised source, you may have fewer legal rights if something goes wrong. This includes tickets you buy from:

✅ A secondary ticketing website

✅ A private individual

✅ An online auction website

🚨 Be careful if the seller asks you to pay for a ticket by bank transfer. This could be a scam.

Instead, use websites that use secure payment methods, like a debit or credit card, or PayPal.

🎉 And, if you’re heading to gigs or events over the next couple of months….. have a fantastic time, enjoy and stay safe everyone.
