🔶 Promoting Mental Health in the Workplace 🔷

Recent worldwide awareness events have highlighted the growing importance of mental health in the workplace, reminding us of the significant progress society has made in understanding, discussing, and supporting mental wellbeing.

As our ways of working continue to evolve, so too does the recognition of mental health challenges and the crucial role employers play in fostering a supportive environment.

According to a Healthy Workplace Ireland survey (March 2023):

▫️ 1 in 5 Irish firms have experienced mental health–related issues in the past year.

▫️ 76% of employers agree that they have a responsibility to support employee mental health.

To continue this positive momentum, we are offering a free training session designed to help employers and staff start meaningful conversations about mental health in their workplaces.

🔶 Introduction to PSYCHED: Mental Health Awareness Training for Staff of Workplaces 🔷

Course Aims:

▫️ Stimulate open conversations about mental health in the workplace

▫️ Encourage employers in Cork and Kerry to engage with staff and set achievable goals for positive mental health improvement

Recognising mental health as a workplace priority is a great start. But it’s action, not intention, that transforms culture.

Just one small step can be the spark that creates lasting change.

At PSYCHED, we’re encouraging Irish employers, especially in trade and professional sectors to take that next step by:

âś… Embedding accountability at leadership level
âś… Equipping managers and peer champions to support teams
âś… Reducing stigma through open culture and policy
âś… Addressing workload, bullying, and disconnecting respectfully
âś… Making support channels and wellness visible and accessible

Our last video in this series for address the alarming reality that 80% of suicides are male. This is why we decided to focus on male dominated industries for the month of October - to draw attention to mental health in the workplace and to encourage companies to offer the support now, rather than wait until it's too late.

Mick Whelan highlights the fact that one in four people will seek support for their mental health. That's 25% of your workforce, and you might not even know that they're struggling.

We've seen improvements in recent years, but there's a long way to go.

We're calling on our PSYCHED Champions to and spread the PSYCHED message to their industry contacts, especially those in male-dominated industries for .

The third video on our series with Mick Whelan for highlights how PSYCHED can support with mental health in the workplace.

PSYCHED stands for Positive Support You Can Have Every Day. It's focused on supporting companies to foster a healthy workplace, through gentle conversations and support initiatives. It about collaboration, not ticking boxes.

To realise this mission, we'd love to see more companies getting involved, attending workshops, sharing ideas and becoming PSYCHED champions. Reach out and get involved at www.psychedworkplace.ie.

Please continue to share PSYCHED's message with your industry partners in Cork and Kerry.

In part 2 of this series, Mick Whelan speaks about why positive mental health should be a key priority for the Health and Safety industry. We're often strong on the safety side, but not always as strong on the health side.

His advice is simple but powerful. All it takes is a simple conversation, make time for a chat.

A healthy workforce, both physically and mentally, is a more productive workforce.

Please join us in sharing the PSYCHED message with your contacts in the areas of trades, manufacturing and construction.

Mick Whelan was studying at University College Cork when he first came across PSYCHED through Daniel Flynn. He was very aware of the lack of mental health support in the construction sector, so decided to do his dissertation on the need for initiatives like PSYCHED.

On completion, he joined the steering group of PSYCHED because of his first-hand experience of the impact of negative mental health. Since then, he's made it his mission to spread the word about mental health and reduce the stigma.

Trades, manufacturing, and construction are the backbone of Ireland, building our homes, roads, and communities. But behind the scaffolding and machinery lies a quieter, more fragile structure: the mental health of the workforce.

In this male-dominated sector, challenges like long hours, job insecurity, isolation, and stigma create the perfect storm for stress and burnout.

Nearly 80% of suicides in Ireland are men, and construction workers are heavily represented in that number. It’s time to act.

We need to treat mental health as a core part of site safety, by training managers to recognise distress, fostering open conversations, and building workplaces where asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

This week, as part of World Mental Health Awareness Month, PSYCHED is highlighting Mental Health Champions like Mick Whelan Safety Services, who are leading the way in creating safer, healthier work environments for all.

Read our full article over on our LinkedIn Channel and keep an eye out for Mick’s video series this week and learn how your workplace can take the next step.
