According to research conducted by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI), private uninsured vehicles represented 4.2% of the overall private fleet across the Republic of Ireland in 2024, an almost 50% reduction from when the same analysis was undertaken for 2022 and the percentage total stood at 8.3%.

From now on it will be an offence for any insurance provider or broker to issue motor insurance to anyone should the driver numbers not be provided for all the named drivers on their policy.

Over 2 million individual driver numbers have already been collected by insurers and these will now be added to the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID).

This information will benefit road safety by allowing An Garda Síochána to obtain a more comprehensive insight into any offences individuals may have committed, making it even more challenging for drivers who act illegally on Irish roads to evade detection.
