Some exciting news!

Pat McBride, from The Paper Conservation Studio in Dublin has been in touch with an update on our restoration project funded by The Heritage Council– the discovery of another watercolour behind a pasted drawing on the traveling case – and the further thrill that each drawing is dated on the back!

Pics and video to follow, we couldn't wait to share. The below image by Heike Theile shows the case before restoration.

The opening of Stones Slabs and Seascapes: George Victor DuNoyer’s Images of Ireland in the Crawford Art Gallery last Friday marks the culmination of almost a years work for The Paper Conservation Studio.

Curated by Peter Murray the former Director of the Crawford Art Gallery with the assistance of Petra Coffey, Scientific Visitor to the Geological Survey of Ireland the exhibition and the accompanying publication celebrates the artistic genius of George Victor DuNoyer (1817 –1869).

It comprises of 91 individual framed works and 11 bound objects illustrating a subject matter which ranges from the landscapes of Ireland, its flora and fauna, botanic and animal specimens, a series of decorated ordinance survey maps as well as examples of archaeological objects. The exhibition presents probably the finest examples of still life watercolour painting by an Irish artist ever.

The studio conserved over half of the works exhibited while undertaking remedial conservation on many of the remainder. All the works were mounted for exhibition to the highest conservation standards. Exhibition condition reports were compiled on each individual loan object and any couriers from the lending institutions that attended were accommodated. Specific display criteria, demanded by the lenders, for light levels, temperature and the relative humidity for the display of the works of art on paper were also achieved.

The exhibition celebrates the genius of a very special artistic talent and considerable credit is due to Peter Murray for appreciating this and realising such a ravishing exhibition.

It runs in the Crawford Art Gallery until January 2018 whereupon it will transfer to the National Museum of Ireland Collins Barracks in March 2018.

Congratulations to all involved with the Medievil Mile Museum opening today in Kilkenny. Grace and her team have done wonders preparing the museum for the opening. It was a pleasure to work on the collection much of which dated from the early 13th century. A must see for anyone in or visiting Kilkenny.
