Should we thank Putin/Trump for forcing Europe to come together as a single entity?
One Europe for all our nations I was 18 years old and we were discussing politics, football and the nice looking girls over at the far side of the pub.

I used to think that I invented the European Union in 1982 with a few friends over a couple of pints of Guinness in O'Neill's pub on Suffolk street in Dublin. I was 18 years old and we were discussing politics, football and the nice looking girls over at the far side of the pub. It was no more than a laugh and an idea that wouldn't it be great if there were something like the United States of America only in Europe. That is where the seed was planted and steadily grew in my head over the coming years. Ireland first applied to join the EEC in July of 1961. Official accession talks began in October of that year. We applied again in May 1967. Official talks were opened for the third time in 1970 which led to an overwhelming acceptance in the 1972 referendum and we finally joined in 1973.
Since then my ideas and views on European Union have deepened. I am now very keen on the idea of a European Republic or at least a Federation of European States.
