Hurling
Hurling, iománaíocht as gaeilge and for the girls camogie, camógaíocht, have been played for over 3,000 years, back to prehistory and our mythology.
The modern game featured as a demonstration sport in the 1904 Olympics and is followed passionately. Our diaspora brought the game around the world. It's played as far afield as Argentine and South Korea.
It's not a sport for the faint of heart. It is considered the fastest field sport. Tackles and play can be very physical!
A match lasts for 70 minutes with 20 minutes extra time if it's a draw. 15 players per team try to score goals, worth 3 points or hit the sliothar over the bar for one point. The sliothar is the unique ball used. When it's struck with the camann or hurl, speeds of over 90 miles an hour are not uncommon.
