🇮🇪🇵🇸Grateful to the Ambassador of Palestine to Ireland, Dr Jilan Abdalmajid, for taking the time to sit down with me in Leinster House today, to brief me on the ongoing situation in Gaza and the wider Middle East. Like many, I feel the news cycle moves on quickly but I am determined not to let the people of Palestine slip off the agenda.

The Dáil may not be sitting this week, but my work continues.

I have known the Ambassador and her family for many years and greatly value her insight and perspective on what is happening in her own home and the wider unfolding crisis.

Tá fíor-bhrón orm cloisteáil faoi bhás Ghabriel Rosenstock. File, scríbhneoir agus aistritheoir ar a bronnadh go leor duaiseanna, ball d'Aos Dána, agus cruthaitheoir nádúrtha den scoth ab ea é. Cé gur rugadh i Luimneach é, ba as Dún Laoghaire dó.

Mo chomhbhrón le hEithne, Héilean, Saffron, agus Tristan, agus ag cuimhneamh ar Éabha; ní maith liom bhur dtrioblóid. Is búaine clú ná saol, agus ní bheidh a leithéad arís ann.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam 🙏

My condolences to Sheila and the wider Barrett family on the loss of a wonderful Dún Laoghaire man. Seán Barrett has been a feature of Dún Laoghaire politics for the entirety of my life. It was Seán and the late Tony Clements who approached me to run in the local elections in Blackrock in 2009, when I took a 2nd Fine Gael seat in the Blackrock Ward.

I always regarded Seán as a great source of pragmatic advice for me throughout my journey in politics. He always gave his unvarnished opinion; that kind of advice in your early years is invaluable.

Although Seán retired in 2020, his legacy is felt in the people I speak to every day, introducing themselves as neighbours of his on Ballinclea Road, those he helped with housing or friends of his from Bective RFC where I played rugby after school.

His longevity is a testament to his sincerity, commitment to public service, and his reputation as a hard worker for Dún Laoghaire.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal. 😞

The Dáil is in recess and that gives us a great opportunity to get out on the doors, meeting people across the Dún Laoghaire constituency and listening to the issues that matter to them.

On Friday I dropped into the Dalkey Active Retirement Association’s annual Art and Floral Exhibition, held in Our Lady’s Hall on Castle Street. Well done to the artists who displayed their paintings, many of which depict scenes from around our community. I was delighted to pick up a beautiful piece, ‘Castle Street, Dalkey’, by Hazel Boylan.

Shanganagh Parkrun turns 11 today!
11 years (that’s 573 Saturdays) of volunteers showing up every week to mark the course, cheer others on and provide a free community powered event for everyone.

Well done to the volunteers who show up, whether showers or sunshine to keep the Parkrun on the road.

There is plenty of funding available through central government or local authorities for community groups, but accessing it isn’t always easy. I raised this in the Dáil today and I commend my colleague Deputy Pete Roche for all of his work in this area.

This afternoon, I visited Acquired Brain Injury Ireland’s residential home in Dún Laoghaire, and had the opportunity to sit down with the wonderful team and meet some of the residents. ABI support over 1,300 brain injury survivors every year, transitioning them out of nursing homes and helping them to live their lives to the fullest.

It was also lovely to catch up with their Political Advocacy and Communications Specialist, Valerie McArdle. I had the pleasure of working with Valerie a number of years ago when I was legal advisor to Enda Kenny.

We all know sometime who has been touched by cancer at one point or another. Irish Cancer Society does tremendous work and if you can support them this , I’d really encourage you to do so. Go to fundraise.cancer.ie.

There are now 5,356 people waiting for tests in Dún Laoghaire as of last month. It is an extraordinary number of people. While the average wait is 21 weeks, it can often be up to 30 weeks, and that’s not acceptable. People in our area may not be able to take up a job, or get to work or college as a result.

I am pleased that the Minister for Transport engaged with me on this issue in the Dáil yesterday. He has committed to discussing this issue directly with his Department. I will continue to offer constructive solutions, such as extending hours for test centres when the days become longer, and temporarily assigning staff from the forthcoming Sandyford Test Centre to Dún Laoghaire / Deansgrange.
