A real pleasure to host Glenageary Killiney National School in Leinster House today. Thanks to all the students, their teacher Aoife Stuart, and Principal Caroline D’Arcy.

Great to meet with the Dún Laoghaire Central Residents’ Association in the Royal Marine Hotel, last night to discuss all things related to the area and how I can help support them in the work they do.

Yesterday I met with Sharavogue owner Betty Allen and Director Gillian Dawson in Glenageary. Sharavogue is an independent childcare provider and in the Dáil recently, I highlighted how exceptionally high operating and commercial costs in the Dún Laoghaire area are forcing local providers like Sharavogue out of the National Childcare Scheme, ultimately impacting parents.

I have raised this matter with the Minister. Remaining “hopeful” they will rejoin the core funding scheme (where providers receive additional funds in return for freezing fees). They have to be given an incentive to do so.

Beautiful day to visit the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove which is an important repository of information and artefacts relating to James Joyce, particularly Ulysses, the first scene of which is set in the Martello tower.

I was delighted to meet with Alice Ryan (Manager), Seamus Cannon (Director), Deirdre Black (DLR Heritage Officer) and Dave Lawless (DLR), to discuss the restoration and repair work that needs to be done and the ways in which I can help this building succeed for future generations. This building is owned by the OPW but operated by DLR County Council with the assistance of Fáilte Ireland.

The cost of running a childcare facility in Dún Laoghaire is higher than anywhere else in the country. It’s forcing providers to leave the National Childcare Scheme. In the Dáil, I spoke about the case of Sharavogue in Glenageary.

Ba mhór an onóir dom fáilte a chur roimh Uachtarán na hÉireann, Catherine Connolly, go Dún Laoghaire ag an deireadh seachtaine. Sheol an tUachtarán “Spirit of Shackleton” go hoifigiúil — luamh nua atá deartha chun an chéad ghlúin eile a chumhachtú trí eachtraíocht, obair foirne agus foghlaim mhuirí.

It was an honour to welcome the President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly, to Dún Laoghaire at the weekend. The President officially launched “Spirit of Shackleton” - a new yacht designed to empower the next generation through adventure, teamwork, and maritime learning.

A wonderful initiative announced by my colleague Minister Jerry Buttimer: From this month all children completing the Government funded pre-school programme (Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programme) and starting primary school are invited to visit their local library and pick up a book bag.

The bags will be available throughout the summer. All families are warmly welcomed to join the library if they aren’t already members and a special My Little Library wallet is available for the children to keep their library card in.

The waiting lists for driving tests in the Dún Laoghaire area are twice the national average, and it’s simply not good enough.

With the proposed Sandyford testing centre unfortunately no longer on the cards, I will continue to engage with the Minister to find a solution that helps people get their tests in a timely fashion and get on with their lives.

I really enjoyed taking part in a ‘Mock Trial’ with the Sixth Class students at St Mary’s Boys NS, Booterstown, which focused on how the courtroom operates. The students took on different roles as part of a case involving the theft of a box of chocolates. They had plenty of great questions afterwards in relation to the role of barristers and solicitors, and the right to fair representation in our justice system when someone is accused of a crime. Thanks to the class and their teacher, Mr O’Keeffe.

If you would be interested in organising a Mock Trial in your school, please let me know at [email protected].
