Anytime we post a map it gets lots of attention
At FEH we are all about the numbers so here is a map of all 26 EDs nationwide

Two weeks ago we were asked about the population per ED for each of our health regions
So we updated our map using ESRI estimated population for 2023
The results speak for themselves
The Midwest will need a second acute hospital in the long term there is no getting away from that
And it must be in because we have the fastest growing population as well as the longest travel times

Seeing an awful lot of media attention in the weekend papers about HSE budget over runs
You cannot run a hospital in 2026 based on staffing for 2024 activity levels
This is why agency spend is so high this is why all around the country budgets are being over run
Not because every hospital is inefficient
Because the target set was unrealistic

It is now September and the new board will sit over the next week or two
Our demands are simple
Equity + Equality = Safety

Its Saturday which means in FEH terms its Data Day 😀
Compared to 2022 UHL has seen an 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝟭𝟰,𝟱𝟳𝟭 patients in the first 35 weeks of the year (that's an average of almost 60 more patients per day)
That is a 𝟮𝟳% 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 in attendance in 4 years and a 𝟮𝟴% 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 in admissions in the same period
So when people talk about "patient flow" we'd be asking where the 1000's of extra patients are supposed to "flow" to
It all comes down to one thing... BEDS...and we are short 100's

It is to be hoped that the new hospital development board which is to meet this month can grasp the urgency of the situation in Limerick

UHL By far the busiest Hospital in the country in terms of attendances and admissions

Extended stays on trolleys or other inappropriate accommodations have been proven to have an adverse affect on patient recoveries
Thie morning there were 9 patients nationwide on trolleys more than 24 hours
This is not good enough and we would hope the health minister is keeping a close eye on these numbers
Peoples lives matter and behind every number is a vulnerable patient

Unfortunately winter 26/27 is going to be horrendous for patients in the Midwest as consistently high trolley counts remain the norm in UHL
This morning 395 patients were waiting on trolleys or other inappropriate accommodations in hospitals across the country with 43 in Limerick
The new board sits in the next few weeks
There must be transparency, accountabilty and most importantly ACTION taken to right the wrongs of the last 20 year
