Recently at the Oireachtas Committee, I questioned IFI (inland fisheries Ireland) officials about the continued closure of the Dunkellin river to salmon and sea trout angling. I also expressed my concerns about the lack of recovery of fish stocks despite the long term closure of the river to anglers.

Tonight, Ballinderreen Community Centre were delighted to accept a Galway Co Co Cathaoirleach’s Award in the category of Heritage Publications. The award reflected the work completed on a series of eleven podcasts, a short documentary film on the achievements of the local community, a StoryMap of the parish and an audit of the built, natural and cultural heritage of the civil parishes of Kilcolgan and Drumacoo. Representing Ballinderreen Community Centre and the local heritage groups were Breandán Ó Loinsigh, Martin Murphy and Michael Coen.

🏃‍♀️ Increase Physical Activity Grant – Now Open! 🏃‍♂️

The Increase Physical Activity Grant funding is intended to help clubs/sporting organisations to increase the levels of participation in physical activity, especially amongst those who are not currently participating through the delivery of new programmes and projects.

Particular emphasis is on Galway Sports Partnership’s main target groups; women & girls, older adults (over 55yrs), people who are unemployed, disadvantaged groups and people from disadvantaged areas, young people and people with disabilities.

The Closing date for receipt of applications is Sunday 17th May 2026 at 11.59pm
Notification of Grant Outcome Mid June 2026.

We will also be hosting a short information session on the grant on Tuesday 5th May at 7:30pm.
