Holycross Abbey Holycross is a very special and sacred place where you can walk in the footsteps of ancient Monks.

Visit the restored 12th century Abbey which offers a unique blend of history, art, folklore and spirituality. Holycross Community Network has been developed to improve the visitors experience in our village and enhance our Facilities to the community. We aim to increase visitor numbers and become an integral part of the visitor network in Tipperary while developing our existing natural and heritag

e resources. And as a local support group to co-operate and co-ordinate with surrounding communities to advertise events.

“From Medieval Walls to Modern Restoration”
Where Stone Tells a Story, Three Abbeys in One.

Did you know Holycross Abbey reveals three different chapters of history within its walls?

From the early rubble stone walls built with uneven local stone, to the beautiful 15th-century limestone doorway and vaulted ceilings added under the patronage of the Butler family, each section tells its own story.

The final chapter came with the major restoration of the 1970s, bringing new life to the Abbey with features like the restored night stairs and striking rose window overhead. Every stone at Holycross Abbey has a story to tell.

An abbey designed to catch the warmth of the setting sun.

Golden hour hits differently at the abbey 🌤️

Step into the covered cloister and look up — the stunning oak roof above was crafted without a single nail or bolt, held together entirely by traditional timber dowels. Beneath it, centuries of history live on in the limestone arcades, first built by master stonemasons and lovingly restored during the Butler era in the 1400s and again in the 1970s.

If you look closely, you can still spot the original mason’s marks carved into the stone… and high above, the signature of Henry Somers, the foreman who rebuilt the roof in the 1970s, quietly connecting past and present.

And there’s one final detail that makes this cloister truly magical.
It was designed to face the setting sun, capturing the evening warmth so monks could sit here in peace, reading their scriptures as daylight faded across the abbey walls.

History, craftsmanship, and sunset views all in one place.
