Terribly sad news of the passing of James Fanthorpe, following an accident at the Annalee River in Ballyhaise yesterday. James grew up beside me on the Antiduff Road and I knew him to be a lovely, friendly young man.

Deepest sympathies and those of our local cumann to his dad Dessie, his mother Anne Marie, siblings, wider family, friends and neighbours. James was a father himself to a young daughter, Arabella.

May he rest in peace.

A public consultation is taking place in relation to speed limits in Cavan's towns and villages.

The consultation period will remain open until close of business Friday 14th August. The proposed speed limit review maps and supporting information can be viewed:

On the Council website @ https://www.cavancoco.ie/news/2026/urban-speed-limit-review-2026-public-consultation/

Or at your local Municipal District office, where hard-copy maps will be available for inspection.

Members of the public are encouraged to review the proposals and make submissions or observations.

‼️🚧 *Treehoo Cross update* 🚧‼️

First phase of safety scheme completed at Treehoo Cross - rebuilding and setting back of the stone walls at the bridge.

✅ Full completion expected during the month of August.

Remaining works will include removal of hedges on both sides, improved sightlines, road widening, additional signage on the approach, and improved road markings.

Ádh Mór! Best of luck to Liga and her team at the new Craft Shop Café i mBéal Átha hÉis. Another wonderful addition to our village.

All credit to Ballyhaise Development Association. This project is community driven and is years in the making. GRMA Comhairle Contae an Chabháin for funding and excellent support 🙏

The building has a storied history, initially built as a Gate Lodge at the entrance to the Big House on the colonial estate.

When I was growing up it was Leo Kelly’s craft shop. I’m delighted that name has carried over into this next era of our local history in Ballyhaise.

📚🚧 Update on repair works at Leabharlann Mhuinchille / Cootehill Library.

I’ve had locals & library patrons contact me about these long drawn out works.

Although necessary to fix the issues with the roof, it is understandable that people are concerned the scaffolding is affecting footfall & safety.

✅ I am now told that we can expect removal of scaffolding in approx 2 weeks. Council & contractors have indicated that new roof slates due to go up this week & next.

Pribhléid mór orm aréir, as co-chair of the Cabhán-Muineachán republican public meeting in Muinchille / Cootehill.

Irish Republicans from across the constituency gathered to discuss the campaign for reunification.

A truly inspirational evening. Powerful contributions from former prisoners Jim "Flash” McVeigh and Marie Doherty.

And especially from our local republican legend, Charlie Boylan 👏

Charlie was the constituency election-agent in the successful 1981 campaign to elect hunger striker Kieran Doherty as TD for Cavan-Monaghan.
