For a third year running, Morgan and Méabh have made St. Brigid’s Crosses to raise funds for two emergency teams, Critical and Banna Rescue. This year they made over 450 crosses and raised € 612 for each charity, smashing their totals from last year. The team are very lucky to have such amazing support from the community and we thank Morgan and Méabh for their huge effort and the long, long hours they have put in. ❤️

🌳 Great news for wildlife!

❤️️ Hedgerows and woodland across the UK are awash with the crimson hues of hawthorn berries, with experts describing this autumn's crop as the biggest we've seen since records began 20 years ago!

👏 Nature’s Calendar recorders have sent in reports of this year’s crop being given 4.2 on the fruit scale – deemed as “exceptional”. This takes in dozens of records where hawthorns are judged on the abundance of their berries, also known as haws.

🐦 This bumper crop is a positive boost for small mammals and migratory birds visiting us for the winter months, such as fieldfares and redwings!

✍️ Want to get involved and record with Nature's Calendar yourself? Anyone can take part, whether you're eight years old or 80!

Moths

Throughout Ireland, we have over 1500 species of Moths. Moths are indicator species and tell us the health of our environment. Adult moths are important pollinators carrying a vast amount of pollen on their furry bodies.

Moths just like bats emerge and fly around after darkness. Bats hunt down moths using echolocation and catch them both in flight and resting on the leaves and branches of trees. It is not all easy for bats however, hawkmoths have adapted to use high pitched squeaks which confuses the hunting bat.
