nmare and Killorglin play a strategic role in servicing their rural catchments as well as supporting and driving the rural economy of the County. Kerry County Council is a vital agent in ensuring that the needs of both rural and urban communities are catered for. However, at the same time the Local Authority is required to take an overall, strategic view of the county to ensure that the future development of the county takes place in an integrated and planned manner. This is to ensure that the quality of life for current and future generations is safeguarded, having regard to the county’s unique historical, natural, cultural and sporting heritage. Together with our staff, and other agencies, including voluntary and state bodies, Kerry County Council seeks to enhance the quality of life of our people and visitors by building sustainable communities and delivering quality services. The Council provides the proper environment to allow the economic development of the county, with investment in essential infrastructure such as transport and communication links crucial in attracting and encouraging business interests to Kerry.

Kerry County Council wins regional Energy Efficiency Impact Award!

Kerry County Council received the public sector Energy Efficiency Impact Award at the Munster Regional Optimising Power @ Work Awards for significant improvements in energy performance. The award praised their operational focus, attention to detail, and effective management, leading to outstanding results.

The Council demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability through investments such as a 230 kW solar PV system on three buildings and a new NZEB-standard modular building to reduce future energy use and emissions.

Additionally, their staff engagement efforts, including an annual Sustainable Development Goals Week with the Climate Action Unit, were recognised.

David Jeffers of the OPW emphasised that lasting energy efficiency results come from combining technical upgrades with a culture of sustainability and staff involvement. The OPW's programme supports Irish public bodies in enhancing energy performance, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering sustainable workplaces.

Over 100 service providers from health, education, community, and the voluntary sectors in Kerry turned out for the first ever Kerry Literacy and Wellbeing Conference in the Rose Hotel Tralee this week. The event was co-ordinated by the Health Promotion and Improvement Team at HSE Southwest and by the Kerry County Council Public Participation Network, on behalf of the Kerry Regional Adult Literacy Coalition.

Summer is here—an exciting season of exploration!

Pick up the Kerry Playground Passport, featuring details for 44 playgrounds throughout the county. Developed by EZxploring in partnership with Healthy Kerry and Kerry County Council, this interactive guide includes maps, GPS coordinates, QR codes, and activities designed for primary school children.

Many playgrounds are inclusive and sensory-friendly, offering sensory equipment, and 41 are equipped with communication boards from 'Finding Charlie’s Voice,' to support non-verbal and speech-delayed children.

A sample passport is available at all primary schools, with additional copies located at Kerry Library branches. The online version can be downloaded in English, Irish, or Ukrainian at https://buff.ly/dsMwtAi.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr. Michael Foley, raises the Blue Flag at Ballybunion beach, one of 16 Blue Flags for Kerry beaches and coastal amenities for 2026, a record number for the county and the highest number in the entire country.

Kerry has retained each of its 15 Blue Flags from the 2025 season, including at 13 beaches which are managed by Kerry County Council as well as Fenit Marina, also managed by the local authority, and the Portmagee Pontoons which are operated by Kilrush Maritime Ltd.

A new addition to the list this year is a Blue Flag award for the Skellig Bounty coastal tour, which is based at Knightstown, Valentia Island and operated by Aqua Terra Boat Tours.

Kerry County Council was delighted to welcome Aoibheann Daly to the Council Chambers on Monday for a Civic Reception in recognition of winning the 2026 Stripe Young Scientist competition.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Michael Foley congratulated Aoibheann on her remarkable achievement, celebrating the pride it brings to her family, school, community, and Kerry. He also acknowledged the vital support from Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School, including teachers, mentors, and the wider school community, whose guidance helped her reach this milestone.
