A stroke is a life-threatening medical condition. The word FAST will help you recognise when a stroke is happening and what you need to do.

Call 112 or 999 immediately. The sooner a person gets treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely to happen. Glaoigh ar 112 nó ar 999 láithreach má cheapann tú go bhfuil stróc ag teacht ort féin nó ar dhuine eile

Last week Offaly News shared this lovely article featuring our paramedics Aidan and Seamus.

Pauline said the Paramedics were “wonderful”. “You can imagine how low and terrible I felt and they were so professional and kind. They held my hand and spoke kindly to me. They were like angels, heroes. And they brought me back, for which I am so grateful.”

Well done to the team and we're so glad Pauline is on the mend.

Twin sisters Mairead Lyons and Therese Walsh experienced rare SCAD heart attacks just a year apart, an ordeal that brought them closer and highlighted the importance of support networks like the Irish Heart Foundation.

Mairead, from Trim, Co. Meath, was a healthy, active 38-year-old when she suffered a spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) in September 2023. The event was life-changing—she faced physical challenges, emotional trauma, and was told she couldn’t have more children. The psychological impact was profound, but finding the Irish Heart Foundation’s resources made a meaningful difference.

“I received the SCAD information booklet from a nurse in the hospital and that led me to the Irish Heart Foundation where I’ve spoken to your nurses on the Nurse Support Line and they’ve been amazing. Seeing all the different information, on the website makes you feel like you’re not alone. I’m part of the Heart Support Network, and a WhatsApp group for SCAD Ireland and I’ve met a few people from the group in person which is genuinely helpful.” Counselling for PTSD has also been a huge help for Mairead.

Her twin, Therese, from Rathangan, Co. Kildare, experienced her own SCAD during fertility treatment in 2024. Because she knew about Mairead’s experience, she sought help promptly, which proved lifesaving. “Honestly, I wouldn’t have gone in if I didn’t know about Mairead.,” she says. Life after SCAD comes with some worries for Therese but thankfully with support from others including the Irish Heart Foundation, SCAD Ireland and her sister Mairead, recovery went well - “we now have a little boy, Jack and we’re all doing great”.

Mairead and Therese are now advocates for women’s heart health, through the Irish Heart Foundation’s “Her Heart Matters” campaign, encouraging others to seek support and not underestimate the impact of stress on heart health. “Listen to your body, particularly in stressful situations, and take some time to yourself, which is easier said than done. Take yourself more seriously if you’re not feeling well.” says Therese

Both sisters emphasise how crucial the Irish Heart Foundation’s support has been in their recovery. The Foundation’s resources, nurse helplines, online communities, and patient panels provided practical advice, emotional reassurance, and a sense of belonging.

Today our crews responded to a multiple-vehicle RTC. Thankfully, this was a fully coordinated team effort from the moment we arrived.

We were supported on scene by Ashbourne Fire Station, a Dunshaughlin Ambulance crew, our Trim RRV crewed with an Advanced Paramedic, our Regional Tactical Manager, and An Garda Síochána, whose traffic management and scene safety were invaluable throughout.

Incidents like this show just how important good teamwork, communication, and inter-agency cooperation are when things get busy. A huge thank you to every crew involved for their professionalism and support.

Please take care on the roads — conditions can change quickly, and every small precaution helps keep everyone safe.

Yesterday, one of our crews attended the scene of a single-vehicle road traffic collision alongside our colleagues from Trim and Navan Fire Stations, as well as members of An Garda Síochána. Our colleagues from NAS Trim Station also mobilized an Advanced Paramedic led RRV to the scene

A great example of effective teamwork between emergency services, ensuring the scene was made safe and that those involved received prompt care and support.

As always, we’d like to remind everyone to drive safely and adjust your speed to suit the road and weather conditions.
