Today, as part of the Age Friendly Waterford Programme, we carried out a Walkability Audit in some of Waterford City's most important and vibrant public spaces - along Merchants Quay, the Viking Triangle and Cultural Quarter.

These historic and cultural areas are at the heart of city life, attracting residents, visitors, workers and tourists every day. They are places where people come to connect, access services, enjoy arts and culture and participate in community life.

Ensuring that these spaces are safe, accessible, welcoming and easy to navigate for people of all ages and abilities is essential to creating an inclusive and age friendly city.

We were delighted to be joined by a diverse group of participants whose lived experiences and perspectives brought real value to the audit. By walking the routes together and discussing both the strengths and challenges of the area, we gained valuable insights into how the public realm can better support mobility, independence, social participation and healthy ageing.

A sincere thank you to everyone who took part today. Your contributions will help inform future improvements and ensure that Waterford continues to develop as a city that is accessible, inclusive and welcoming for all.

Waterford’s 'Not Slowing but Knowing' launches as Ireland’s First Age Friendly Podcast Series

“Not Slowing but Knowing”, a new eight-part podcast series from Age Friendly Waterford in partnership with Waterford Older People’s Council, has launched as the first podcast in Ireland dedicated to the Age Friendly programme and positive ageing initiatives.

Hosted by Tony Kelly, the series celebrates the value, participation and wisdom that come with age, while exploring what it truly means to age well in Waterford.

Across eight episodes, 'Not Slowing but Knowing' highlights the work of the Age Friendly Programme in Waterford. The podcast challenges stereotypes around ageing by showcasing older people’s experiences and contributions, highlighting the supports that help them stay active, connected and valued in their communities.

The opening episode features Seán McKeown, Chief Executive of Waterford City and County Council and Chair of the Waterford Age Friendly Alliance, who sets the foundation for the series by discussing the importance of creating communities where people can grow older with dignity, participation and connection.

“Age Friendly Waterford is about ensuring that older people feel valued and included. This podcast is an important platform for sharing experiences, highlighting positive ageing initiatives, supports for older people and celebrating the valuable contribution they make to our communities throughout Waterford.”

Jim Farnan, Chairperson of Waterford Older People’s Council added, “Waterford Older People’s Council is proud to support ‘Not Slowing but Knowing’. This podcast gives older people a platform to share our experiences and voices. Ageing is something to value and celebrate, and this series reflects the important role we continue to play as older people in our communities.

“We hope these conversations encourage people to think differently about growing older and to consider getting involved with the Waterford Older People’s Council to strengthen representation and ensure older people have a strong voice in shaping an age friendly Waterford.”

The 'Not Slowing but Knowing' podcast forms part of the wider Age Friendly Waterford initiative which supports older people to live a full, active and connected life within their communities.

The Age Friendly Waterford Programme is administered by Waterford City and County Council in partnership with Waterford Older People’s Council and the Waterford Age Friendly Alliance.

Nationally, the programme is co-ordinated by Age Friendly Ireland and is aligned with the World Health Organisation Age Friendly Cities and Communities framework, which supports communities in becoming more inclusive, accessible and supportive places in which to grow older.

Listeners can follow 'Not Slowing but Knowing' on major podcast platforms and through Age Friendly Waterford channels.
